Guest guest
a patient is inquiring about HGH for her 13y athletic daughter who has not yet achieved menarche and is a little behind in her height percentile. i've explained that the menarche is not yet considered delayed, and that her athletics may be a factor. she does not appear to be small for her tender age to me, however her parents are concerned about their only child's health and development. i cautioned about hormone supplementation and rec'd to let nature take its course. nutritional supplementation is not my area, though i did agree to research the matter for them. if they decide to go that route, i want to make sure they use a high quality product and at a proper dosage. i usually order nutritional supps from pure encapsulation; however, they do not include hgh in their product line. i'm wondering if those of you who are involved in nutri supps could rec a product for this purpose? thanks in adv, kb -- Kath Bartlett, LAc, MS, BA UCLA Oriental Medicine Experienced, Dedicated, Effective Flying Dragon Liniment: Effective pain relief for muscles & joints Formulated by Kath Bartlett, Traditional Chinese Herbalist Available at Asheville Center for , or web order at: https://www.kamwo.com/shop/product.php?productid=17442 & cat=0 & page=1 Asheville Center For 70 Woodfin Place, Suite West Wing Two Asheville, NC 28801 828.258.2777 kbartlett www.AcupunctureAsheville.com
Guest guest
Hi Kath, I teach in my own anatomy/physiology course that growth hormone is part of the night time " cocktail " of hormones. It's higher following a joyful and active daytime experience. When the activity is stressful and injurious, cortisol at night eclipses the growth hormone concentrations and even inhibits its outflow. I explain this to my students in this manner. Growth hormone should be the leader or main ingredient in the night time hormone formula. Cortisol is necessary like a " bloodhound " . Imagine growth hormone and the liver's insulin-like growth factors following the lead of their cortisol bloodhound to sniff out and repair tissues and homeostatically grow tissue in a balanced way. This is especially true in childhood when growth and tissue repair is developmentally more active than in adulthood. Growth hormone is part of the night time cocktail that is present during deep sleep. That's when we do the heavy lifting in the biosynthetic pathway. If your patient's parents can hear this information, they might want their daughter to ease up on the rigor of her sports training for awhile. Just enough to make it more fun and less onerous and injurious. That will maximize her own body's GH output during sleep. She might also try making sure she gets eight hours of sleep each night. I don't recommend supplementation with a biological end product of any kind. Growth hormone is under negative feedback homeostasis. Exogenous application will turn " off " the body's own growth hormone synthesis and secretion. This is not a wise procedure. Unless there is an acute illness, I would not recommend unhinging a homeostatic system. I hope you can bring the parents around to seeing this. Good luck. Guest guest
Ms. Bartlett, According to Dr. Li-Chun Huang of http://www.earmedicine.us/index.php she used the following protocol to stimulate growth in two patients with dwarfism (note: for use before age 18). Pituitary Endocrine Forehead Thalamus Kidney Exciting Point Smart Point She recommends the use of ear seeds for all of her treatments, so patients can press (stimulate) the points at home. I have been using her auricular treatment protocols for the past eleven years with great success. Guest guest
Kath, The parents came to you, an acupuncturist and herbalist, despite the fact that they wanted human growth hormone supplementation. Your Chinese medical treatments are about promoting zheng qi, improving the " internal dialogues " of homeostasis. Exogenously delivering an end-product of a negative feedback homesostatic system (GH turns off the system when it is released) is the opposite of CM's rectifying and improving the internal dialogues. Exogenous delivery of most end-product substances will not only turn off the system but will also cause receptor down syndrome (reduce cell receptors for the active molecule). This is stopping the internal dialogue and will eventually lead to problems that are generally only rectified by the application of Chinese medicine. An interesting irony. I'm not tell you anything you don't already know from your training and experience. I'm just passing you more ammunition for when you have to communicate with this family again. Following the " da qi " tonification sequences will help this girl get stronger. We are at the latter stages of Yin tonic tonification in the northern hemisphere. The other thing that comes to mind is that this girl undoubtedly has a variety of sports available to her. Most gymnasts are quite small, basketball players are usually tall, and soccer players come in a wide variety of sizes depending upon field position. Just more ammunition for reasoning with the parents. No doubt they dream of valor and glory. (^; Respectfully, Emmanuel Segmen

Guest guest
Ms. Bartlett, Per your request, here are the point locations and functions (from Auricular Treatment Formulae and Prescriptions, by Dr. Li-Chun Huang): (1) Pituitary (2) Endocrine (3) Forehead (4) Thalamus (5) Kidney (6) Exciting Point (7) Smart Point --------------------------- (1) Pituitary Location: It is called Central Rim and Brain Point, located at mid-point of the line from parotid to the notch between antitragus and antihelix (Helix Notch). Function: It is called the Ventral Rim and Brain point. It corresponds to the pituitary gland. It can be used for diseases due to functional disturbance of endocrine glands and gynecopathy, such as amenorrhea, irregular menstruation and sexual impotence. It can be used for diseases due to functional disturbance of the pituitary gland such as dwarfism, diabetes insipitus, Sheehan's syndrome, pituitary tumor and diabetes mellitus. It can also be used for hemorragia diseases such as profuse menstruation, and functional menorrhagia, hemorrhoid, and prolapse of rectum. (2) Endocrine Location: It is located in the inferior portion of the Cavum Concha, 0.5 cm down the notch between Tragus and Antitragus. Function: It has the effect of regulating endocrine function and can be used for diseases due to functional disturbance of endocrine, such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus and diabetes inspitus. It has anti-rheumatic, anti-infective and anti-allergic effects. It can be used for allergic diseases, rheumatic diseases, collagen diseases and dieases of the urogenital system and various inflammatory diseases. It can be used for the diseases of the disturbance of the absorptive functions such as mal-digestion and atrophic gastritis. It has the effect of removing dampness and relieving swelling so that it may be used for edema due to functional disturbance of the endocrine system, angioneurotic edema, eczema and obesity. (3) Forehead Location: It is located at the mid-point of the line on the exterior antitragus from temple to intertragus notch. Function: The key point for tonifying the brain. It can be used for frontal headache due to various causes. It relieves dizziness and improves acuity of vision. (4) Thalamus Location: It is located at the mid-point of the lower line of the interior Antitragus. Function: It corresponds to hypothalamus which is the center for vegetative nerves. So this point can be used to regulate the function of the internal organs and some physiological functions, such as body temperature, water-electrolyte metabolism, endocrine and emotional reaction. (5) Kidney Location: It is located in the superanterior corner of Cymba Concha. Function: The kidney is a point with the function of tonification which can help a person retain health. It controls the fire of the " vital gate " which is the dynamic force of development and growth. We can use the point Kidney for various chronic and debilitating diseases... (Sorry, too many for me to list.) (6) Exciting Point Location: It is located at the mid-point of the line between Testes and Thalamus. Function: It has the effect of exciting the cerebral cortex. It can be used for lethargy, nocturia, obesity, diseases due to endocrine or sexual hypo-function, such as sexual impotence, Sheehan's syndrome and amenorrhea. (7) Smart Point Location: It is located at the Corresponding to the Forehead of " Posterior " surface of the Auricle. (Forehead - front side, Smart Point - back side) Function: Tonify the brain. It is also used to relieve Alzheimer's disease.
