Guest guest
We are in the midst of dealing with new legislation that has been presented in both the assembly and the senate that would no longer allow acupuncturists to discuss nutrition. According to current law, this is within our scope of practice. The new proposed bills only allow the giving of nutritional advice to MDs, RDs, chiropractors, and weight loss centers. Have any of you in other states had to deal with fighting similar legislation? We are looking at how to have the bills amended to include acupuncturists. Thanks for your input. Guest guest
The argument against this legislation has to be presented as follows: Chinese medicine is a complete system of medical care that includes internal (herbal) medicine, acupuncture/moxabustion, manipulation AND nutritional theory. It is based on different criteria than Western nutrition, like all of Chinese medicine based on yin yang theory. It cannot be separated from the body of Chinese medicine, is taught at all Chinese medical colleges, and cannot be excluded from our scope of practice by other professions without violating right of trade. Guest guest
Bill: You are making me laugh. Meredith: You folks in Wisconsin (a hot bed of politics as I write this) have got to get acupuncturists included in that group. Go to someone and fight for it. Explain what the prerequites were for you to get into acupuncture school and also what you studied in school. You might compare it to an MD curriculum or a chiro curriculum. You certainly don't want to be excluded. What is with weight loss centers? What kind of credentials do they need? Anyway - just go in there and get included, with some backup for why. Why the other cast of characters is included is another issue. Anne -- Anne C. Guest guest
You're so right Anne. Thanks for the great suggestions. We are banding together and writing letters, writing amendments, scheduling meetings with representatives, etc. To date, our state organization is too poor to afford a lobbyist. I think we seriously need one to keep these things from getting this far. I will pass on your suggestions. Enjoy your freedom to practice! I hope to retain mine!
