I just saw this posted on ehowto.com...does anyone provide their patients with

needles and teach them how to needle themselves? I have not heard of this.

Introduction Acupuncture is an ancient technique used to promote health and

well being by inserting small needless into different points on the body. In an

effort to save their patients money, some acupuncturists have started providing

their patients with acupuncture kits to use perform self acupuncture between

treatments.

Instructions Difficulty: Easy

Steps 1

Step One Schedule an appointment with an acupuncturist. It is important to

see a professional to learn the proper way for performing acupuncture before you

begin. Check your local phone book or search on the Internet for an

acupuncturist in your area.

2

Step Two Choose an acupuncturist that encourages self acupuncture as part of

his treatment method. You will need an acupuncturist who is willing to teach you

the methods and supply you with the needles. This is now common practice at many

traditional Chinese medical clinics in the United States.

3

Step Three Familiarize yourself with acupuncture so you know what to expect

before your first appointment. Acupuncture can be uncomfortable and scary if you

have never done it before, but it is not usually a painful treatment.

4

Step Four Lean how to perform self acupuncture properly by practicing in your

acupuncturists office. She will be able to teach you proper placement of the

needles based on your individual needs.

5

Step Five Sterilize your needles in boiling water before each use. Using

dirty or unsterilized needles for acupuncture can cause infection. You should

wear plastic gloves when handling the needles after they have been sterilized.

6

Step Six Consider combining an herbal treatment with your acupuncture. Most

acupuncturists will recommend Chinese herbal remedies be used in addition to

acupuncture depending on your particular needs.

this sounds bogus to me: this is common practice? sterilize needles in

boiling water? the LAc wil teach you where to put the needles?

my guess is that this would be considered an unlawful practice: i cannot

believe training patients to needle themselves is in our scope of

practice. i'm not even sure we can let patients leave with needles retained,

to be removed later. i rather doubt many patients would even consider

needling themselves.

this sounds like wishful thinking on the part of a writer wanting free

acupuncture. patients will have to satisfy themselves with moxa or plum

blossom when appropriate. if they want to needle themselves they need to go

to acu college.

Wow, Twyla,

This is pretty scary and reeks of unprofessional conduct and malpractice suits,

not to mention losing one's license. I'd not heard of this until now, and I am

wondering who is promoting this, and why. Sounds like an issue to be brought to

the attention of our national organizations.

This is not in our scope of practice, unlawful and a bad idea.

Acupuncturist should send letters/e-mail to ehowto.com asking them to remove

this " how to. "

Andrea, I did not keep posts handy, but I CAN tell you

I have seen reference on these boards to practitioners

sending needles home with patients.

Folks may donate blood if they have just had

professional acupuncture. If you send a needle home

with them, they are not allowed to donate blood. Of

course, once the needle leaves our office we have no

control over Clean Technique and sanitation and risk.

I recall bringing up this donation issue relative to

sending needles home.

Actually, anyone who sends a needle out of the office

just threw risk down the toilet!

Twyla,

Per my other post, I have certainly heard of

pracitioners sending pts home with needles. I have

never heard of an Acupuncture Kit being made, let

alone sent home with a pt, however. Where did they

come up with this stuff? Heaven forbid someone who

does send Kits home with pts gave them this info?!

Lynn, I am very surprised to hear this, as I had not heard this before. I only

remember a discussion about someone leaving staples in the ears for weight loss.

I don't know any practitioners who would send needles home with patients. I

never would.

By the way everyone, my first name is Andrea Beth.
