Hi Eric, & All,

From WWW today:

Three New Treasures of Changbaishan: Dongbei has always been known

for its three treasures (Dongbei Sanbao) of Renshen-ginseng, Lurong-pilose

antler and marten.

In Changbaishan, however, a new version has more recently been making a

name for itself. The three new treasures of Dongbei are composed of two

Chinese medicinal plants, Hongjingtian (red-spotted stonecrop), Bulaocao

(Boschiakia rossica), and Hamayou-oviduct of the forest frog.

Hongjingtian is a perennial that mainly dwells on alpine igneous rocks

between 1700-2500m above sea level. The medical efficacy of the plant is

due to a special glucoside, which is conducive to the curing of such illnesses

as cardiomyopathy, diabetes and TB. In addition, it has also is alleged to

help those who use cellular phones or who are exposed to long periods of

radiation (from your PC and TV, for example).

Bulaocao is a parasitic plant, and is only willing to seek habitat in the most

barren climate. People who have tried this plant from time to time have

claimed a longer life and slowing down of the aging process.

Compared with Hongjingtian and Bulaocao, Hamayou has honoured and

brilliant past: the forest frog used to be the favorite of the imperial family,

thanks to its tender flesh and rich protein. As to its medical value, it is

mainly

used for curing LU diseases.

Bulaocao (Hb Boschnikiae rossicae) is a parasitic plant growing on the root

Alnus plants (Betulaceae). It is one of the valuable medicinal plants growing

mostly on the Changbai Mountain at 1450-1800m above sea level in Jilin,

China. It is also distributed in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea

(DPRK), Japan and Russia. It is named " Bu Lao Cao " (antisenile plant) bc it

acts to Tone / Nourish KI & Strengthen Yang; Tonic / invigorating Hb; loose

bowel, Haemostat & Antiageing / Antisenility

Jilin Province, China. Accepted: 8 July 1999 To investigate the inhibitory

effect of Boschniakia rossica (BR) on rat precancerous hepatic foci induced

by diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and its antioxidative activities. Methods: The

expression of tumor marker-placental form glutathione S-transferase

(GST-P), p53 and p21 protein were investigated by immunohistochemistry

techniques using ABC method. TNF-? was measured by ELISA and

antioxidative activities of SOD, MDA, GSH-Px, GST and CAT were

investigated by colorimetric method in rat serum and mitochondria of liver

cells. Results: The 500 mg/kg of BR-H2O extract fraction from BR-methanol

extract had inhibitory effect on the formation of DEN-induced GST-P-positive

foci in rat liver and the expression of mutant p53 and p21 protein was lower

than that of hepatic precancerous lesions. The serum TNF-? was increased

by the administration of BR extract in the early stage of chemical

hepatocarcinogenesis in rat livers. The serum and liver cells mitochondria

activities of SOD and GSH-Px rose again in rats administered with BR-H2O

extract and the increasing activity of GST and content of MDA in the hepatic

precancerous were decreased by the BH-H2O extract. Conclusion: These

results indicated that BR-H2O extract has inhibitory effect on DEN-induced

precancerous hepatic foci in rats and induced TNF-? production in rats. The

antioxidative action was exhibited by the administration of BR-H2O extract in

the early stage of chemical hepatocarcinogenesis in rat livers. Key words

Bioschniakia rossica - Placental form glutathione S-transferase -

Hepatocarcinogenesis - Antioxidation - TNF-? - Diethylnitrosamine This

work was supported by a grant from the National Natural Science

Foundation of China (No. 39660021).

of pig serum-induced rat LV fibrosis w Boschniakia rossica, oxymatrine &

interferon-alpha; World J Gastroenterol 2005; 11 (1): 122-126

http://www.wjgnet.com/1007-9327/11/122.asp AIM: To investigate effect of

Boschniakia rossica (BR), oxymatrine (OM) & interferon-alpha (IFN-a) 1b on

therapy of rat LV fibrosis & its mechanism; METHODS: By establishing a rat

model of pig serum-induced LV fibrosis, LV/weight index & serum alanine

transaminase (ALT) were observed to investigate therapeutic effect of

BR,OM & IFN-a; Radioimmunoassay was utilized to measure procollagen

type III (PCIII) & collagen type IV (CIV); RT-PCR was used to assay

expression of LV Transform growth factor- beta 1 (TGF-b1) mRNA;

Immunohistochemistry of alpha-smooth muscle actin (a-SMA) & pathologic

changes of LV tissues were also under investigation; RESULTS: Serum

PCIII & CIV in BR, OM & IFN-a groups were significantly declined compared

w those in model group & their RT-PCR revealed that TGF-b1 mRNA

expression was also reduced more than that in model group;

Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that a-SMA also declined more than

that in model group; Serum ALT in IFN-a, control & model groups was within

normal level; Serum ALT in BR group had no significant difference from

those of IFN-a, control & model groups; Serum ALT in OM group was

significantly higher than those in BR, IFN-a, model & control groups;

CONCLUSION: BR, OM & IFN-a can prevent pig serum-induced LV rat

fibrosis by inhibiting activation of LV stellate cells & synthesizing collagen;

OM has LV toxicity to rat LV fibrosis induced by pig serum; 2005 WJG Press

& Elsevier Inc; All rights reserved; Key words: LV fibrosis; Boschniakia

rossica; Oxymatrine; Interferon-alpha

Oxymatrine (OM) is a preparation of alkaloid aqueous solution extracted

from matrine; It has biological functions of Antiinflammation, antibacteria,

antivirus, Antitumor & immunosuppression; There are many reports about

prophylactic effect of CHM on LV fibrosis & its function to suppress

activation of LV stellate cells.

PS: Note: Suoyang (Hb Cynomorii songarici) is sometimes called Bulaocao.

Though Hb Cynomorii & Hb Boschnikiae rossicae have some similar actions

and uses, they are different herbs.

For a detailed monograph on Suoyang, see http://tinyurl.com/37pcj9

For a monograph on Bulaocao see, http://tinyurl.com/3c3b4a but the

translation is poor and the bottom half is a sales pitch for a Bucaolao Electric

Blanket!! Copy the translation into Wenlin software for fine-tuning.

Best regards,

Phil, I believe that the rhodiola plant that is famous in NE China and

Russia is a different species of rhodiola than hong jing tian. Hong

jing tian is a Tibetan herb. Does anyone know more about these

rhodiola plants? In the Zhong Yao Da Ci Dian, I see the Tibetan one,

but I don't see the NE China/Russian one, though I have heard it

discussed a lot lately.
