mixing herbs with juice- no can do?

Occasionally patients ask for a logical answer as to why it's not ok to mix

the herbs (decoct/granules) with juice, etc. esp. when taking the rx with

meals is permissible. i usually reply with an explanation that the juice,

etc becomes part of the rx when the herbs are mixed with it, and that since

its not a chin herb, its adversely affects the synergy of the rx. the next

question is why is it any different than taking the herb with a meal: it all

ends up in the ST at approx the same time for ingestion. at this point i

tell them that they raise a good point, but one for which i don't have a

logical answer, and say that traditionally we don't do it (mix the herbs

with juice, ice cream, you name it).

does anyone have a better response for question #2?

thanks,

kath
