Treatment of Phantom Limb Pain

Hi All,

I have not treated phantom limb pain, but would approach it like this:

(1) Needle the relevant points on the contralateral limb (arm for arm, leg for

leg.

(2) Needle relevant (esp sensitive) points on the ipsilateral ear.

(3) Needle the relevant Scalp Points (mainly Sensory, Motor & Tremor

Areas). See:

http://www.acupuncturetoday.com/mpacms/at/article.php?id=30431

(4) Needle sensitive points on the diagonal limb (points on left foot for PLP

of right hand; points on right elbow for PLP of left knee, etc), as in Richard

Tan's Mirror Method.

(5) Though the distal part of the limb is absent, all Channels can be

accessed at the end of the stump, or proximally.

One concept of AP is that " points at one end of a Channel can Tx problems

at the opposite end of the same Channel " .

Thus GV26 or GV20 can Tx rectal prolapse or haemorrhoids and GV01 can

Tx vertical headache.

Using that concept one could needle, for example, left ST02 for PLP in left

toe 2, or needle right LI20 for PLP in right finger 2.

I would treat weekly, alternating points for 3-4 sessions and decide which

points gave the best result.

Then I would advise patient to buy a 2-socket (4-pad) TENS and teach

him/her the locations of the best points for daily DIY treatment at home.

I would ask him/her to report back (by phone) weekly, and to come to the

clinic for reassessment and top-up acupuncture once monthly until a

satisfactory result is reached.

As PLP may involve neuritis / neuralgia, I would also advise daily oral

homeopathic Hypericum C30 tablets or drops for a few weeks.Hyp is a

master homeopathic for stab-wounds and neuralgia.

Has anyone tried to dowse for the best points on the etheric field (Qi scaffold

/ Qi shadow] of the missing limb? I have a gut feeling that pointing needles

[with focused intention / Qigong] at those (absent, non-physical) points might

help.

Best regards,
