Guest guest
Hi- I have been asked to talk to a local Easter Seals center about acupuncture. This center treats children age 0-5 with Autism/Asbergers/ADHD. I am looking for some research information - or personal success stories - to share with this group. Thanks in advance, Graham

According to acupuncture theory, autism is due to imbalances in the body energy system which can be corrected by acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture can regulate metabolism and reduce allergic responses. The Washington Acupuncture Center has treated more than 100 autistic children successfully. Most autistic children show significant improvement in responsiveness by the time they have had six treatments, but many more are usually required to enable the child to function normally. Although children may not cooperate well with acupuncture therapy at first, they usually become surprisingly willing to have the needles inserted as they begin to improve after the first few treatments. Apparently they soon discover that the treatments are not very painful and are helping them to function better.Autism is on the increase around the world, with current estimates ranging from one in a thousand to one in five hundred children affected. No one knows exactly why the numbers are going up. The old theory of vaccines causing the problem has been largely discounted, while other theories encompassing viruses, antibiotics, nutrition and environmental pollution wax and wane. Because autism is a baffling and difficult problem to treat, many parents are turning to alternative therapies to try and help their children. The western orthodox approach to treating children with autism has ranged placing them in care to working on improving their social and communication skills. There is no `cure' as yet for Autism, leading some parents to try alternative therapies for symptomatic relief and possible improvement in the condition of their children. One popular recent approach is acupuncture, even though autism as defined by western medicine is not recognised by Traditional Chinese Medicine. Anecdotal and preliminary medical evidence suggest that children with autism can benefit from acupuncture. While a cure is not to be expected, acupuncture seems to give symptomatic relief to children. Though it may be a challenging experience for the child and the parents in the beginning, the results seem to suggest that it is helpful in the long run. Traditional acupuncture requires the patient to lay still for long periods, to endure the close contact of a stranger and the invasive insertion of needles, all of which could prove to be exceptionally difficult for a child, particularly one on the severe end of the autistic spectrum. But Paediatric acupuncture addresses some of these issues. Acupuncture for young children doesn't require them to lay still as with adults. It's just a quick prick (with super thin needles) at pressure points. Acupressure is an alternative for those who would prefer a less invasive treatment. A study was done in the US to observe the effect of acupuncture on the brains of children with autism. The acupuncture treatment was given once every other day, for four months. After acupuncture treatment; of the 22 cases, 20 had remarkable improvement and 2 had significant in cerebral blood flow. Before the treatment there were significant differences in blood flow between the left and right cerebrum and between the left and right frontal lobes, however, after treatment, no differences were found between them Preliminary clinical trials have been conducted in Hong Kong to establish the effectiveness of tongue acupuncture – a relatively new treatment method that is thought to be particularly effective for children on the autistic spectrum. Traditional acupuncture has been practiced in China for over 5000 years, but tongue acupuncture has developed only over the last two decades. Based on the traditional Chinese view that the tongue and heart are connected through meridians that spread to all the organs of the body, it is believed that points on the tongue influence the state of the body's organs and it is through this that relief of autism's symptoms occurs. Most agree that a combined approach to diet and alternative therapies can offer symptomatic relief to suffers of autism, improving mood and communication skills in children. Though it will always be on a scale of improvement, rather than cure. Brain Fog - The Fog That Never Lifts By Dr. Maoshing Ni, L.Ac., D.O.M., Ph.D. Many of us have experienced feelings of spaceyness, together with difficulty focusing and a slight feeling of being disoriented. When these feelings cannot be associated with any identifiable disease or condition, I group them under the nonspecific category called " brain fog. " Most people's episodes of brain fog are brief and fleeting, but for some the feeling is semi-permanent. It is one of the most frustrating and non specific conditions that patients complain about because it robs them of their quality of life. Those afflicted are often not sick enough to be bedridden, but are not well enough to enjoy a productive life. Brain fog can be associated with other conditions where maintaining mental focus is an issue, as in Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and Autism. The inability to concentrate can affect both adults and children alike and is often associated with other physical, psychological, and emotional problems. Some causes relate to infectious diseases such as Lyme disease, Epstein Barr virus and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that go undiagnosed and untreated for years. Physical changes from concussive accidents, low blood pressure, and menopause can leave people dazed and unfocused for months and even years. Neuropsychological problems such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia can also produce alarming rates of cognitive decline. In some cases there may be added complications such as memory loss. In Chinese medicine, the ability to concentrate relies heavily on the abundance of vital energy (Qi) and a smooth flow of nutrient rich blood to the brain, providing for a clear mind, healthy heart, and radiant spirit. The source of the nourishing vital energy that is essential for clarity of mind comes from the normal digestive functioning of the stomach, spleen, and pancreas as well as the kidneys. Excessive damp and mucous build-up in the digestive organs, notably the spleen, prevents pure energy from rising to our heads and denies the energetic nourishment needed for clear mental activity and a bright spirit. In my experience poor diet and inadequate sleep are the most common causes of digestive weakness. Excessive consumption of foods such as sugars, dairy, wheat and fried foods are commonly implicated in the production of dampness and mucous. It is important to first pin point the underlying cause of the brain fog and determine how the pure energy is being obstructed from rising to the brain. Treatment is often two fold: first, we focus on removing the cause of the fogginess, and second, we strengthen and harmonize the functioning of the digestive organs and of the heart blood circulation to increase production and flow of vital energy and restore clarity of spirit. A successful treatment involves the following: Changing one's diet to remove the foods that contribute to dampness and/or heat, and to include foods that regulate blood sugar and nourish bodily functions; weekly acupuncture to direct the flow of nourishing energy to the brain; Chinese herbal tea to restore organ function and balance; and regular energy enhancing exercise and meditation to improve circulation and mental concentration. Gradually, over the course of several months, our patients observe their vitality returning and they are able to regain a normal and full life. Dr Mao's Case Studies Here are two typical cases of patients with brain fog and the treatments they received. The first involved a teenage girl who, despite being a good student, struggled with concentrating in class and completing her homework. She would often study well into the night because it took her twice as long to complete her school assignments as her classmates. A psychiatrist diagnosed her with ADD and recommended she take prescription medication. Her mother was concerned about the long-term health risks of prescription medication, so she bought her to us in an attempt to find a more natural approach and solution. Upon questioning, I discovered that the young girl's diet was inadequate and she overextended herself with school commitments and sporting activities, and therefore was not getting adequate sleep at night. From a Chinese medical perspective, I diagnosed her as having weakness in the stomach/spleen and kidney systems. My lifestyle recommendations included: eating 5 small nutritious meals per day; avoiding all refined starches and sugars; getting to bed by 10 pm; and having regular acupuncture and herbal therapy. She recovered completely within three months. This was because of her consistent efforts to modify her lifestyle, drink the herbal tea and come for weekly acupuncture treatments. The second case involved a female in her mid-thirties who, despite having seen various specialists, was not diagnosed or treated effectively for her condition. She was experiencing constant fatigue, muscle and joint pain throughout her body, and had difficulty performing even simple tasks such as reading. She was unable to think clearly or concentrate for any length of time. She dragged herself through life even though she appeared normal. This caused her further frustration because the people around her could not understand why she was unable to function normally. I determined that she was suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. In my experience many of my chronic fatigue patients have been exposed to viruses like Epstein-Barr and Cytomegalo that stress and weaken the immune system. In Chinese medicine, conditions like these are due to an invasion of damp and heat pathogens. These pathogens weaken the functioning of the spleen and kidney systems and lead to an inability to produce adequate energy for normal immune and brain functioning. The dampness and heat obstruct the muscle meridians, often causing pain and inflammation and they also depress the digestive functioning of the spleen, stomach and pancreas, which under normal circumstances work together to form our vital life energies. Overall, her ability to produce life-giving energy was chronically compromised. Her treatment plan focused on supporting her vital energy and organ systems along with restoring her immune function. The comprehensive treatment plan incorporated the following: 1. Diet to reduce inflammation 2. Daily Qi Gong and Tai Chi exercise 3. Weekly acupuncture 4. Daily herbal tea After 4 to 6 months of regular weekly treatments she was 95 percent recovered and back to living a full and normal life. Also there is a book of dr Aung about ADD (CLINICAL INTRODUCTION TO MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE).THERE IT IS WRITTEN THAT THE REASON OF THE SIMPLE ADD without hyperactivity is the kidney essence,a blockage of the governing vessel and the homeostasis is out of balance .Also there is a blockage in zang fu organs and may be a trauma or a head injury.Weatern say that it is idiopathic._ The acupuncture points arethe following :EX-HN3 directed towards the channel flow,KI6 bilateral,GV20 along the flow direction,GV4,7,9,14,20,24,5,EX-HN1(lateral two points directed along gv_),SP21 bilaterally,GB 41bi,LI 11 BI,liver 13 BILATERALLY,LIVER 3 bilaterally,SP 10 BILATERALLY,BL 17 BILATERALLY,BL 46 BILATERALLY,GV9. Guest guest
Graham, My cousin had Autism for more than 12 years. He is now completely recovered, normal. Let's take a look how it this happened. He was a healthy young man, aged 22, and began to have autism after his girl-friend left him for 2 -3 months. After that he lost his job, returned to his family and lived there. His father always nagged and showed his hatred toward him. His mother knew and tried to reason with his father, but his father refused to cooperate. Autism grew worse. People, MDs , always try to find out what goes wrong with the brain or chemical imbalance, but they forget to look into mental aspect. This is their problems and there is no cure , except of getting worse by Prozac or sedative drugs. Suicide attempts happen daily. When I faced my cousin I asked about the family status, lifestyle and the truth love around him. This is the key. Let's look at some of the 5 element : Heart pertain to love, expansion, happiness, charming... Heart Qi is lack , deficient ( love is loss, happiness is gone, expansion disappeared replacing by isolation or consolidation, charming is also lost ).... Heart ( fire element, heat, love, expansion, charming, communication open into the tongue- to talk )..... Does it seem that this is Heart Qi, Heart essence deficient ? Heart blood, essence and Qi are produced from Sp-Sto Qi ( food Qi ). From there are 2 Qi ( YIng and Wei ). The Ying Qi is clear, goes inside, deeper and nourishes blood and organs. The Wei Qi is turbid, goes outside and transported by Heart and Lung Qi. He-Lu Qi spread the Wei Qi to the meridians, collaterals, nourish all tendons, muscles, skin and hair and protect the alien invasion... Heart Blood and essence nourish the Shen, the clear mind and for social life. Kidney stores essence. This essence produces blood and from here it produces marrow. Marrow , in turn , nourishes the brain. Hence, there is a clear mind, outward going. Full of essence ( Full of yin ) produces sound sleep. Remember the essence here is from the Liver ( Liver stores blood. This blood is the essence of the lowerjiao different from the upperjiao. I am talking about 2 kinds of essence : the upper ( he-Lu ) and the lower ( Kid-Liver ). The upper essence from He-Lu is deficient from Love ( Qi and blood ), the Lung for Qi " sadness " , the Heart for blood " love " . The lower essence from Liv-Ki ( from fear, frightened, or from anger ), the liver for smoothing Qi " clearness, must be active " , the hatred, the grudge; the Kidney for essence " the growth, lifesource " , the fear, frightened. If the kidney is deficient ( from fear , frightened, scaredness from molest or threatened ???... ), not enough essence of life to nourish the Heart ( Ki-He or Water-Fire )., autism appeared as frightening, unhappy, dislike the crowd, the light. If the Liver is deficient ( from anger, hatred, loss of love ... ), not enough Qi for smooth flow, there is sight ( interrupted breathing ...., chest stuffiness ... ) If the Heart Qi is deficient ( parents not taking good care or not paying too much attention to their children, not spending their time with them, not showing love, but demand and orders ... ) If Lung Qi is deficient ( sadness, the loss of love one, or of love... low self-esteem , loss of job... ) If we can find which pattern is lost or is being disharmonized, we can efficiently treat it........ HOWEVER, THE MOST IMPORTANT IS THE PARENTS' PROBLEMS. THEY MUST SHOW THEIR LOVE AND THEIR CLOSENESS. GIVE THEM CONFIDENCE TO GROW. SHOW THEM THAT YOU ARE TRUE FRIENDS AND CAN BE TRUSTED..... P.S We must eliminate the molestation first if he or she is a child. Find out who he is afraid of or he who he hates. Some effective treatments are the trust and true friends!!!! My cousin problem was the He-Lu and Liver. The treatments were with WORDS OF LOVE , and with the parents' adjustments. During the treatments no medication, all were stopped. But the weird thing, I prescribed Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan " He-Ki " plus Long Dan Xie Gan Wan. He is happy and seems to enjoy life so much now. LOVE ALL OF YOUR INPUTS....... If you pay good attention to your patient, you will have good fruits of returns. Good luck to all , Nam Nguyen

Before the treatment there were significant differences in blood flow between the left and right cerebrum and between the left and right frontal lobes, however, after treatment, no differences were found between them Preliminary clinical trials have been conducted in Hong Kong to establish the effectiveness of tongue acupuncture - a relatively new treatment method that is thought to be particularly effective for children on the autistic spectrum. Guest guest
As a parent of a young child with Autism I am absolutely disgusted by this response. Firstly you are not seemingly healthy for 22 years and then come down with Autism, that is impossible. At best someone could get that far along and be diagnosed with Aspergers, but the person would have shown mild signs for the majority of their lives. Your cousin may very well have had issues, but I guarantee they were not Autism if they are as you say in your post. Second, and by far more importantly AUTISM IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ABUSE OR BAD PARENTING. It makes me sick that anyone even puts this out there. There are millions of parents who give everything they have, their hearts, their income, their house, their marriages to help their children survive such a terrible disorder. Since I do not know your cousin he may have had abuse issues that lead to mental/emotional issues, but that is not Autism and please do not go on spreading that it is. Julie O. - dr_namnguyen58 Chinese Medicine Monday, October 29, 2007 7:09 PM Re: Treating Autism/ADHD Graham, My cousin had Autism for more than 12 years. If the Liver is deficient ( from anger, hatred, loss of love ... ), not enough Qi for smooth flow, there is sight ( interrupted breathing ..., chest stuffiness ... ) If the Heart Qi is deficient ( parents not taking good care or not paying too much attention to their children, not spending their time with them, not showing love, but demand and orders ... ) If Lung Qi is deficient ( sadness, the loss of love one, or of love... low self-esteem , loss of job... ) If we can find which pattern is lost or is being disharmonized, we can efficiently treat it........
Guest guest
Julie, My cousin was diagnosed with Autism, you do not have to believe it. He confined himself in a dark close room, doing nothing all days for more than 12 years, not talking to anyone, after eating he returned to his room. He looked like a homeless, attempted to suicide about 5 times. He hardly took shower or take care of himself. His parents had gone with him to see all kinds of MDs ( internist, neurologist, endocrinologist, psychologist , and finally psychiastrist ). He was diagnosed with autism and treated for 10 years. I do not know why do you think it is not autism and have you seen this patient ? Was he your patient ? If you have not seen him, you should not make a judgment. I am sorry for your feeling. I think this ( my ) post here is not for you if it offends you. I wrote this to share with others, TCM , not address specifically to you. So, you do not have to get upset... I am sharing my view in TCM way. There are many disagreed or disapprovals or contrast in views, but this is just one case I faced. I cannot talk about case I have not seen. My point here, children sometimes behave as adults. They need love and as a parents we must provide this need. If they do not have the love from their parents, in the beginning there will be no signs, but in a long term this will grow out of control and they will behave differently. If autism is a chemical imbalance or from a brain damaged, of course, there must be viewed and treated accordingly. My sample is not an exclusive one, but it may help someone who may come across with the same situation. Again, I am sorry for your feeling. Guest guest
Nam, My concern for your post is not about your TCM theory, I do not dare to criticize your diagnosis or your ability to diagnose from a TCM standpoint - none of my post is in regards to your ability to perform TCM. My point is that " Autism " is apparent within the first three years of life, if a person has been seemingly healthy for 22 years, then they absolutely do not have Autism. Please refer to my previous email on the possibility of Aspergers. While you did not post his signs and symptoms other than depression and suicide attempts, this is no reason to believe this even has to do with the Autism Spectrum. If you would like to post what made you or his other doctors believe it to be Autism I would be interested to hear it. My biggest concern about your email was that you are leading people to believe that bad parenting and abuse causes Autism, again this is absolutely not true. Autism is a neurological disorder, it is not caused by crappy parenting. This was a theory back in the 50's and it was coined " refrigerator moms " which supposedly were moms who didn't take proper care of their children or give them love causing them to withdraw, this theory has long since been discarded. Spreading this is extremely damaging to those millions of parents out there who try so hard, give so much to help their children, and love unconditionally most often with nothing in return. I just ask that you understand that. Please. Bad parenting can cause a multitude of mental/emotional issues but it does not cause Autism. Guest guest
i searched the web for the diagnostic criteria for autism. It is apparent that autism has to do with emotional and language abilities, and should not be confused with severe, bipolar, or other types of depression. diagnostic criteria for autism here: http://ani.autistics.org/dsm4-autism.html depression: http://www.allaboutdepression.com/dia_01.html bipolar disorder: http://www.fortunecity.com/campus/psychology/781/dsm.htm it sounds like your friend could possibly have severe depression, although if you had a professional diagnosis, that is probably the case. Please explian the difference between symptomatic improvement & cure when we talk from acupuncture perspective. When we talk of symptomatic improvement in western medicine we mean giving pain killers or other medcines to mask the pain or other symptoms. I've not read any thing like this in chinese medicine. When we get improvement in our patients, this is done by improving the cause of thet disease so we get symptomatic improvement with improvement in the disease itself. Guest guest
Julie, As you said you have a child with autism and I do believe you know more about this than I do. Trust me! There is a definition of autism as a brain disorder " infantile autism " concerning children up to age 3. What autism means in my mind ? Autism from Latin " auto means self + ism_ the state of " . From here, autism to me is a self behavior, a behavior not interesting in anything except in self ( not speaking, not responding, not social, not interested in life, not show any emotion " empathy " , not interested in doing anything, seems like a vegetable ). I think this word is a self-explainatory. IN WM, they first do not explain what autism means, but they all say it is a brain disorder. How do they try to feed us or patients with flood of information that we or they do not have a clue what it means. Later, they spell out some symptoms... They still do not explain what autism mean. I asked a patient, my cousin, and his parents what it meant... None of them understood what it meant, but they threw some symptoms and somes vague causes of chemical brain imbalance, sounded as experts. And they knew and understood for sure just as they are medical doctors themselves...... Some say dopamine deficiency, others serotonin, fews gene ( genetic ), and chromosomes... MDs, they all blame the cause of the the brain from genetic or some chemical ingestion. If they say it is a neurological disorders, they are not wrong. Anything in our bodies is a complex work of neurons, chemical work. How many cases have they seen in these problems and how did they solve them? If there theory and view are precise, why do they have to turn into Alternative medicine " TCM " ? TCM does not define this is a neurological disorders nor a brain disorder, but it does have different views of its own. May be there are some TCM will have successful treatments, but to make themselves more popular, they will bend, lean or borrow the theory of WM to confuse other TCM. If a TCM says it is Kidney problem , a problem with energy " yin and Yang " . Others say it a Spleen-Stomach problem because they produce energy ( Qi and blood ), no Qi no movement, no transmission. Some say it Liv Qi stagnation because its Qi is irregulated, not harmonized, the same thing in serotonine or dopamine " neurotransmitter " problem. Some crazy TCM will say it is from heat, others lunatic TCM will say it is from Cold........ Anything they say above, to me , nothing is wrong, but it did not come close to a diagnosis or to a treatment. There is no start and no end. So, they are worthless... All we need is a sound, a logical view and a result treatment. If we believe that autism is only the cause of the brain and only happen before the age of 3. We are one of them, MD. This is the one-way street... Adults do not have this kind of behavior???? What a beautiful world !!! I do believe autism can happen by any unknown causes at this time and it can happen at any age if it fits the definition " self " . I believe in some depression or emotional problem may exhibit patterns of autism, but there are clues to distinguish or recognize the differences. This can turn into that, and that into this, we called it " The I-Ching " , the constant change of thing in a universe... However, the infantile autism is a special case it must be classified as infantile, something like juvenile diabetes and adult onset diabetes...Easier for medical men, save time, in research and in diagnosis. I will be totally convinced in evidence if MD has successfully treat autism and if they have solid view. Until now the causes of autism are unknown and there is no cure. There are wide range of theories, but not one is a solid. P.S If the causes are now unknown, why there are websites about autism stating that brain disorder ? serotonin, dopamine, genetic disorders, chromosome disorders ??????? If there are evidence here or the above statements are true. They are known causes, aren't they?..... Are we also confused ??? Eventhough we TCM, MD are confused here, but patients ( not infants, but adults here ) themselves and their parents are so sure and they do understand them more clearly than us, TCM and ... They can explain to us as above. Please forgive me Julie. I do not wish to spell out the symptoms or patterns of this illness for you are able to find it everywhere on websites. Just type " autism " and search. I hope my case is not an offending case to whom who have an infantile autism... It is a learning process, not teaching anyone, but a weird experience .
