Guest guest
Has anyone had any experience using acupuncture and herbs to address snoring? I have not met the patient in person, but I do know: it is chronic issue he is NOT overweight he does not have a deviated septum.. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you, Bess
Guest guest
Hi Bess, I had treated a few snoring patients who had no illness. My principal treatment was aiming at Du chnl, level with UB15 , indicating or connecting with the Heart meridian or organ. This has brought instant result. For long-lived effect , herbs should be added. I view this case a blockage of Qi ( Qi stagnation )in the throat or the weakness of epiglottis which may not open itself properly when people are at rest. THe sound and noise are the vibration ( wind, the breath ) moves the epiglottis up to exchange air, somehow, it is too heavy to lift up by the inthernal air ( wind ) and with the friction it makes noise. The Heart meridian ascends from the heart up to the throat to piglottis ( epi_ upon, around + glottis_ little tonuge )and to our tongue............... Hey , my crazy view here has helped me !!!!!! Furthermore, Heart is the fire element and presents in upperjiao, upper body. Fire moves very quickly and strong, also generates strong and powerful wind making a lot of noise. AGAIN, aim at your Qi and do not side track. If QI is moving without blockage or stagnation and friction, there will be no sound ( snoring ). WM ( Western Medicine ) point of view as a sinuses problem ( the blockage of sinuses. epiglottectomy is the treatment. If our patient is weak or in deficiency case, Qi tonification must be added. ANY INPUT ARE WELCOME !!!!!!!!!!! Nam Nguyen GOOD LUCK !
Guest guest
Hi Bettyg, I have never had experience as such treating someone for snoring as it tends not to be a disease, unless of course it keeps oneself awake or places train on a relationship by keeping others awake! However it is cited as being caused in TCM by various forms of phlegm. That is to say mainly, Phlegm heat, Damp phlegm, dry phlegm all in the lungs or just phlegm with Lung and Spleen deficiency. Remember though that in TCM a sign or symptom on its own is useless. Let's see a pattern/syndrome first. Guest guest
Hi Dan, Snoring is not a disease such as phelgm, damp or blood stagnation... Beside, there is no harm in snoring, but there are those who know they are snoring really need help if you ask them. I have seen and heard at least 5 out of 10 need treatment if you ask them. Snoring is sometimes a reason for a spouse who denies to share his / her bed with another......... Nam Nguyen

Guest guest
Hi all, Meant to respond to this earlier....main western reasons for snoring are overweight, sleep apnea, and prolapsed uvula (hanging down thingy in the back of throat). As usual treat what you see, but have seen phlegm (overweight), and spleen qi failure to hold...best success has been with the spleen qi def and have used Bu zhong yi qi wan and reishi mushroom caps (ling zhi). after about 2 weeks usually see about 50% improvement reported by spouse and patient...for over weight no real progress unless they lose weight. Guest guest
Hi Bob, There are so many people with skinny frames have snoring problem. The statistic of WM , most of them are overweight, is a figure they pick it out from the air. I do not believe them! There are also too many false statistics......... We have to observe and ask to find out. They, MD, may only ask patients in hospitals who are overweight. Let's look at this one : Most patient of high blood pressure should lose their weight. DO they know that there are so many people with high blood pressure are underweight........ Other cases in diabetes, " They should lose weights and do exercise. I observe and see too many people with diabetes are so tired, exhausted and underweight. HOw can they do exercise " where are the energies ? " . Their frames are too small and skinny " How can they lose weight ? " ........... Those facts are just references we must not overlook. Beside, those overweight people are easier to convince them that their bodies are all the causes and we all know that the weight has an attribute. If you have success in your works, no matter in what field, allegeries, pain , stress, go on and develop it. Study more in WM pathology and diagnosis and interpret them in your own TCM you will find more interesting in practice. But do not blindly based on WM statistics : Today tomatoes are healthy, tomorrow they cause certain cancer, the next day they are healthy food...... THis is garbage !!! YOu have found new way to treat snoring ! I am proud of you. I often base all kinds of illnesses are the cause of Qi disharmony according to TCM, nothing special. Thanks for sharing your experience. Guest guest
Hi Dan, First , I must thanks you for your ineterst in my views. Because of your interest in eye-to-eye, here is my view. Female age 65, has dry and irritated eyes, worse with certain oils of nuts, seeds and meats as well as with oil application. Blood test revealsed toxicity of arsenic and tin. Progesterone was used in therapy…. Dry hair, dry skin and brittle ridge nails, underweight, poor muscle tone on upper limbs, constipation with dry stool difficult to pass, incomplete evacuation , nightly fever but not sweating, dry mouth and throat in early morning, yellow urine with strong smell … Red veins in eyes, slightly muddy / yellow appearance with good shen… Noses blocked with thich yellow phlegm and cleared up after being up for a while, dry lips and little peeled, pale complexion/sallow with smal red blotches scattered over cheeks….. Symptoms worse with despair or down-spirit….. The problem has gotten worse over 10 years, history of hepatitis at young age, poor relationship with parents at childhood, heavy dark red blood but painless. Pulse 68 / minute, slow and very slight wiry choppy, overall are weak… Thin white tongue coat and somehow dry with bluish-purple tongue Most females age 65 in U.S are considered healthy if all conditions and lifestyles are adaptable. Somehow, these people have passed their menopause, a lot of changes in their bodies and minds. Their physical bodies have also been underchanged especially the hormones in adrenal cortex ( Ki-yang, remember cortex_cover , the outside " Yang producing corticosteroids, steroids … something relates to corti…. ) and adrenal medulla ( Kid-yin, adrenal medulla_ medu_ middle, inside " yin " produce progesterone, estrogen, adrenalin, aldosterones……. ) At this age, TCM , kid yang and kid yin are declining, but not that bad in U.S. Ki ( Yin-Yang ) the life source begins at Mingmen Fire, the root of all changes, and the activities of all nature. Yin deficiency will show any signs above as dry eyes, dry mouth, dry skin, dry nails, dry hairs….. Thin or thready pulse with speed…. In this case the pulse is slow ( actually normal if 68/min ) which means there should be no heat !!!!!!!! If there is no heat, then there is no Yin Def !!! This must be body fluids def or Blood def. Blood def will yield all signs of Yin def except of heat, and fast pulse… underweight ( blood and jing def ), poor muscle tones, not enough energy ( Qi def ) to evacuate wastes. Nose blocked with yellow phlegm and no cough ( rare… usually phlegm comes from Lungs ), getting better after being up for a while ( indicating Qi stagnation, must move or in action to get better )……..All other symptoms are Blood deficiency signs. Arsenic or tin poisoning can cause all kinds of the above the patient has, and reveals serious fatal signs depend upon its level……… This must be taken in consideration ! Before concluding this is Blood deficiency with Qi deficiency in this case we must eliminate all other problems. " Is she or has she taken any medication ? " . Perhaps those medications produce problems gradually, especially progesterine or estrogine " synthetic hormones " . BE SURE all toxemia are free ( no more arsenic nor tin in blood ). In my view, I must take care first at Qi……….. Eventhough Qi does not evidently a strong point or a strong key. But to me , it is all the causes. If Qi is weak there is no transformation of Qi, Blood and body fluids. Blood , Jing and body fluids cannot be transformed into Qi by themselves……. Tonify Qi and eat certain food which can be transformed into blood to nourish all tissues, organs and skins… Only Qi can evacuate waste and this Qi must be free of flow…. Strong smell and dark urine might be the cause of certain vitamins, medications ( Be sure it is not internal heat, but chemically reacted ) …… Yellow sclera in the eye " damp in SP, but no manifestation. I can eliminate this. " History of hepatitis……… Hepatitis can stay dormant for 30-35 years and reactivate after that. This is a serious business!!!!!!!!!! Must have her recheck with MD to take care of this matter... DO NOT IGNORE THIS POINT ! Wiry choppy pulse " indicate not enough blood in artery, Blood def… and not enough flow " ………….. WHAT ORGANS SHOULD I AIM ??? The prenatal Qi ( Liv-Ki ). This is Blood deficieny taking root from Kid and Liv. There was no signs of headaches, confusion nor depression which means the Shen has not been affected, not spreading far enough… Kid is the root of Marrow, Jing and hormones, but the manufacture is at the Liver…… Liver manufactures all kinds of chemical reactions and the site of all materials are being made " glucose, glycerine, triglycerine, cholesterols - HDL and LDL -, hemoglobins, RBC, WBC, T4 , T5 … and all hormones no matter it is secreted from pancreas, pituitary glands, hypothalamus glands, thyroid glands, salivary glands, thymus glands, lymphs, adrenals………………………….. ) Tonify the liver is tonify the Kidneys ( Blood, yin-yang, Jing, shen ). The Shen is rooted at the Kidney and manifests in Heart. Liver Qi must be smooth, Kidney must be healthy to produce and store all life energy… Please do not forget POSTNATAL QI ( SP-STO ). I will choose first tonify Yang ( Mingmen fire ), Du 4 moxa. If there is no moxa, no result, for all blood and jing are so deficient……… pseudo heat will be subsided if moxa is applied. Moxa at Du4 will revitalize all DNA and RNA ( the microstructure of life ). Ren 4 and 6 can be accomodated……….. These 3 points are for the root, preserving the life of the patient. For dry eyes , I choose Liv3 ( regulate and smooth Liv Qi ) , Liv2 if there is heat symptom ( Live heat or fire ) otherwise, NO , NO…… sedate fire or heat means killing Qi………….. S36 ( I always use in case of Qi def… and with no instant result ). G41 ( for dry eyes… I sometimes used when there is no other symptoms, with a remarked result )… FORMULARS : First, I will prescribe Ba Wei Wan or Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan in the morning, Liu Wei Shen Qi Wan or Liu Wei Di Huang in the evening.... ( no matter which one is first , but it must be used 2 formulas in the same day. ) After 3 days : Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan in the morning , Shi Xuan Da Bu or Ba Zhen Wan must be used………………. I think ACU treatment can have definite effect here within 3 treatments, but usually one treatment will see some signs immediately… HERBS ALSO MUST BE USED ! AGAIN, Thanks to you for your interest! GOOD LUCK TO ALL, Nam Nguyen
Guest guest
Aside from the spouse leaving the bed issues, snoring can prevent someone from taking in enough air and it's often a sign of sleep apnea which is an illness-oxygen levels drop in the blood while this is happening. Stopping breathing multiple times per night can leave someone very tired during the day. It is much more common in overweight people. So maybe there is something you can do to clear up what's blocking their breathing so they can avoid the cpap machine etc. Chinese Medicine Chinese Medicine On Behalf Of dr_namnguyen58 Monday, October 08, 2007 12:16 PM Chinese Medicine Re: snoring??
