fever and back pain

Hi Y'all

I have a 21 y/o patient with severe back pain. Pain began about six hours

after she hoisted a heavy water bottle unto a cooler. L4, L5, S1 intense

pain and pressure with pain referring to right hip and pelvic area

bilaterally. Sciatic involved, GB channel taut at all trigger points.

Tongue: slightly purple, moist.

Pulse extremely rapid and rolling at heart, sp.

Hands and feet cold, almost clammy and complained of severe occipital and

right temple headache. BP 130/70, Temp 102.6 degrees Farenheit. I

recommended she go to the nearest hospital ER due to the fever as I wanted

to rule out kidney infection, meningitis, tumor, ectopic pregnancy etc. The

hospital ran the usual tests: urinalysis, blood work, CT scan, X-rays, even

pelvic exam. Nothing. Nada. No diagnosis. Not pregnant. Everything normal,

including sedimentation rate and WBC (a tad low).

Today her temp is hovering at 99 degrees Farenheit inspite of rx for pain

and fever, Pulse 88, rolling, KI a bit thready. Back pain reduced by AP tx

using microcurrent. She is not currently taking any medications, or other

drugs and has no history of thyroid or other endocrine problems. Occasional

smoker. No street drugs or alcohol history.

What am I missing regarding this persistence in the elevated temperature?

Thanks for all your generous help.

Hi Artemis

She only became aware of the fever on Friday, the day after she injured her

back as I recall. I will review her symptoms re: triple burner. Thx, th

A slight temp increase can happen with injury. I am a bit concerned with

some sx of shock as well as the head pain. Do you use abdominal palpation

and if so have you considered releasing the area around the umbilicus as it

is related to the adrenal/kidney and can be hyperactive with trauma?Mike W.

Hi Twyla,

There has to be more to it than that: Ask her about any history of trauma,

either emotional or physical. I suspect that lifting the bottle may have pushed

a button, so to speak. Also, after the first session of acupuncture, besides the

fever dropping, were her tongue and pulses different? Also, find out more about

her lifestyle:does she drink coffee? sleep, eating, and sexual habits? Young

people like that tend to burn the candle at both ends, she may be severely

depleted and lifting the bottle may just have been the straw that broke the

camels back. BTW, if she drinks a lot of coffee, it is a clue that she might be

severely depleted.

All the best,

Yehuda
