Hi, New to group. I would appreciate any healthy info. on how to treat hypothyroidism. I am currently taking 75mcg of Synthyroid and 5mcg of Cytomel. Also taking meds for depression and HB .Advised by my new Endo. to eliminate white flour, dairy, and red meat. Much easier said than done.I have been drinking soy milk, but isn't soy "bad" for hypo's? What about Rice milk? What about iodine???? Any good lists of foods to eat? I have no energy and my mental fog is really bad these days. I did find that when I was walking and going to the gym 3 x's a week,I felt much better. Yup...going back but want long term health benefits and no "Big Pharm" if I can help it.Anybody out there? Could sure use some support!! Will

reciprocate!! P.S. VS....54/female/130lbs/5'2" Lost 19lbs last year, but since have gained half back.

Synthroid is a synthetic T4 which docs believe is a good substitute for the real thing and that its manufacture is well-controlled, The fact is that Synthroid has been recalled five times since its introduction as an improvement to Armour thyroid extract which was not well controlled. The fact is that Armour is well-controlled and has never been the subject of a recall. Armour includes T2, 3, 4, (and more) that science cannot duplicate at this time. The T3 fraction is the active component which will not last a full 24 hours in the body, (Neither will the syntheticT3/Cytomel). T4 is the storage form that is activated to the T3 form by selenium and other minerals when the preformed T3 runs out.

And what about the T2 in Armour? Well, it seems that many hypothyroids on Synthroid get depressed because it never makes it to the T2 level which is a natural antidepressant.

If you look up natural antidepressants, you will find the amino acid, tyrosine. Tyrosine really doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier. What it does do is combine with two iodines to become T2, which accesses the brain as a mood elevator.

I suggest you get on Armour extract and, whatever you do, do not take any calcium supplement or even drink milk. within four hours of taking the thyroid. The calcium will bind most of it and the effect will not be full or consistent.--- On Tue, 12/23/08, Anne Galli <subaruview wrote:

I had been given a script for hypothyroid and since my Dad and brother had taken synthroid for 40 and 20 yrs respectively, i assumed it to be accurate. I asked my doctor if I could try holistic and food instead and he gave me 6 mos to try that. i researched and realised the CABBAGE family was a no no. Turned out I had been on a cole slaw kick for about a month. I removed all of the cabbage family and retested normal. Never took synthroid. Google for "hypothyroid and cabbage".
