Guest guest
Hi, I recently had a bout with my sister-in-law over safe, healthy drinks for children, namely my two sons vs her daughter. To get a picture of how our lifestyles are different, I will take a moment to give a brief summary of our children's daily diet. My two boys are ages 15 months and 4 years: A random day....breakfast: banana on toast with peanut butter; lunch: ham sandwich on wholegrain, wholewheat bread with miracle whip or honeymustard; snack: raisins and animal crackers; supper: purple hull peas seasoned with pieces of country ham and cornbread. All beverages include milk, occasionally use Ovaltine, black tea, coffee-for me, water, and real fruit juices-cranberry, grape, apple, orange, etc. All meals and snacks are followed by a thorough brushing of ALL teeth with baking soda. No sweet toothpastes here. Also, no unneccesary sipping of any beverage other than water between meals, to allow teeth a break from sugars. My neice, skylar is 2 1/2 and her average day diet for any particular day includes-breakfast-1/4 cup dry Dora brand cereal-no milk (her mother does not make her drink it, because she " dosn't like it " - (unless her mommy adds about 4 tablespoons per sippy cup, Nesquick Strawberry powder!), because it isn't sweet!, *washes her cereal down with about 2-3 cups of Kool-aid, various flavors and neon colors, throughout the day snacking on cupcakes her papaw brings and hard candy and Halloween chocolates. Lunch time-has yet to brush teeth even once! She eats A piece of boloney, and A piece of cheese, followed by about 3 more cups of Koolaid; Snacking all throughout day on sweets, Supper: Lil'Entrees Prepackaged toddler meals warmed up in the microwave.... with more koolaid.. to bed with koolaid. When our kids go with their grandparents, Skylar drinks the koolaid provided there and the pepsi and diet coke her grandparents drink, I send my children juice and tea and remind my inlaws to give them water afterwards... Now I just want to ask... which one of us will most likely have the most problems down the road-both dental and behavior wise and what resarch has there been done linking these things together that could possibly help back me up? Thanks, Mary in Guntown Mississippi
