Officers also killed his dog.By Eric Leonard/KFI NEWS Monday, September 1, 2008A shirtless homeless man who disobeyed orders to keep his hands up was shot by a half-dozen Inglewood Police officers on Market St. Sunday, the fourth fatal officer-involved-shooting in that city in as many months. The unidentified man was struck by numerous handgun rounds and shotgun blasts, police said, and died at UCLA Medical Center. Officers also killed his dog. Police said it appeared the man was reaching for a handgun tucked in his pants. Stray police bullets fell along nearby streets; one punched the windshield of a Honda and struck the driver in the head. He was treated and released from a hospital. A sea of yellow evidence markers covered the sidewalk between two Inglewood Police cars stopped at the shooting scene, indicating the positions of dozens of expended shell casings from officers' guns. For nearly 8 hours, Inglewood Police refused to acknowledge its officers had been involved in another deadly shooting, even as its police chief, Jacqueline Seabrooks, toured the bloody scene and glanced towards reporters. Finally, close to 11:00 p.m., Lt. Gabriella Garcia gave this account: - Around 2:00 p.m. Sunday, police received calls a man was waving a chrome pistol along Market Street south of Hillcrest, near "Woody's Bar-B-Que." - Officers were on-scene within 2 minutes and confronted two men pushing shopping carts. - One of the men followed officers' orders; the other had a pistol in his waistband, and was shot when police said he moved his hands towards the gun. - An unknown number of officers fired from handguns and shotguns and the man was struck numerous times.- The gun turned out to be a replica of a chrome, semi-automatic pistolThe shooting was the fourth fatal officer-involved-shooting involving Inglewood officers in the last four months, and community activists who appeared at the police station late Sunday said it was further evidence the U.S. Justice Department should investigate the incidents.
