Okay I will probably step on toes here, but I must say this is a good topic, none of likes to debate things like marijuana, but we do because it is good for us. Not everyone, but for some of the more stubborn pain issues it is a fabulous healer. Helps people sleep like babies and it's legal in many states now.

I really wish that my grandma had access to it when she was dying of

colon cancer. Unfortunately, all her doctors used was morphine which

slowly shut down her body. She had a miserable end of her life and I

really think that marijuana could have helped.

I have to say though that they thought of seeing my grandma smoke

marijuana is a little humorous.

i absoutely agree that, pot has its medicinal benefits, however when it is abused, like any other drug it has devestating effects. i am not against its use for medical purposes at all and, it bothers me that folks are in jail, or lose their kids over pot. my concern is the propaganda that recreational use doesnt lead to addiction. its a bad message for our youth. remember when tehy said cocain wasnt addicting?

I do not suugest hemp be illegal. Hemp is too valuable a commodity to ignore. I merely suggest that marijuana not be made legal. You have a good grasp for the benefits of hemp but not for the dangers of marijuana.--- On Thu, 8/21/08, Beverle Sweitzer <redbeverle wrote:

"Those who want to legalize it are already users or want to be users."

Sorry - not true. You might want to drop blanket statements and generalizations from your argument. If it was legal and sold in stores I wouldn't smoke it. Did once, didn't like it.

I have researched its use and potentials and know that it is an under-utilized commodity. During the Revolutionary war farmers were mandated to grow hemp since it made such fine rope. Generally, if hemp is harvested properly, it doesn't need to be replanted. It will grow anew from its base. It is the only material that can make a continuous (i.e. infinite) strand. Paper could be made without trees. The seeds contain oil that is not only high in protein but can be burned as a fuel. France uses hemp to make super-light, almost fireproof, insulating building blocks.

Indicting hemp as an agent for getting high would be the same as damning corn, wheat, rye or Juniper berries because they are used to make forms of liquor. How many uses are there for grapes? Can you make clothes or sails from grapes? How many mean drunks have you known? Most of the dope smokers I have known are/were simple, lazy people that didn't cause harm. I don't want to be like them and I don't drink either.

Your rabid condemnation is embarrassing and speaks poorly of your ability to learn and absorb. As far as I am concerned there is no debate about hemp or marijuana just lack of knowledge.

Very poor answer. There are many other things that can help people with their pain - They just don't get you high. Those who want to legalize it are already users or want to be users.--- On Thu, 8/21/08, Craig Rawlings <craig wrote:

Very poor answer. I am sorry also that there are thousands of people like you who won't debate, just hate, and keep regurgitating the old govt propaganda like ADDICTION. This keeps millions of people who could be helped by this herb to seek treatment with it.Craig

(snip) hemp is benign, marajuana is not and when abused is addicting. but hardly the biggest threat facing our society..... ..In over 40 years of study on Marijuana, I have never read any study that has shown it be be "addicting" even if it is "abused". Can you please give me a source to back up your statement? And I mean a real study, not the Govt propaganda. Hemp is Marijuana, the only difference is that when growing Hemp, male pollination is allowed to occur, which drives down the THC content. For smoking or ingesting, only the female buds are used and pollination is not allowed.Craig

It has been fairly well established that cannabis is not PHYSICALLY

addictive, unlike for example cocaine. People become addicted to all

sorts of things including work, gambling or even watching television.

Force an average American to go a week without watching any

television and many will act like junkies looking for a fix.

This debate is interesting because one of the biggest competitors of

cannabis is the SSRI drugs like Prozac, Lexapro and Paxil. Feeling

depressed? Don't take a natural plant that you can grow in your

backyard and self-medicate. Instead go to a psychiatrist, who has

been trained by a medical school, who will write you a prescription to

be filled by a pharmacist consisting of a drug produced by a

pharmaceutical company, which is regulated by the federal government.

By legalizing the growing and using of cannabis for personal use all

these people and organizations loose their cut.

SSRI drugs straddle the line of what is an additive substance. A user

cannot stop using a SSRI drug cold turkey. If he or she does then the

user will feel withdraw symptoms even though the person does not crave

the drug. (Many suggest that most of the major school shootings were

caused by people who stopped taking their SSRI drug which caused weird

behaviors.)

Therefore, the debate over addictiveness is false. Should we outlaw

food because a few people are addicted to overeating? More people are

addicted to prescription painkillers than all the illegal drugs combined.
