Guest guest
**I am not specifically saying this as an attack to Andrea's post, nor am I saying it in response to the comment made.** However, what has happened to our grammar, specifically in our writing? People do not capitalize the first words of sentences, they don't capitalize the word " I " , they don't use punctuation, etc. Some people write in all caps. It really doesn't take that long to use the correct grammar principles. It makes it very difficult to read things like this when you've been reared speaking/writing a language and have been taught the proper rules. I'm certainly not an expert on the matter, but I do try to do my best. Once again, I'm not trying to attack anyone specifically. We all have our quirks, right? I think I'm very guilty of being one of " those " who do not trim posts...I'm working on that. :-)
Guest guest
I agree. Writing is supposed to be a concise and precise way to communicate our thoughts. But in the modern era of shotcuts and text messaging shorthand writing has become a sloppy way of communicating so that we can bemoan that people keep misunderstanding us. --- On Tue, 8/19/08, mommy2threelilboys <mommyon731 wrote: mommy2threelilboys <mommyon731 OT: good grammar Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 7:42 PM **I am not specifically saying this as an attack to Andrea's post, noram I saying it in response to the comment made.** However, what has happened to our grammar, specifically in ourwriting? Guest guest
I will continue to read what you write because you have something important to say. However, you should learn to take constructive criticism without accusing others of having bad manners. You should realize that what you write once should be worthy of being read by many. You show disrespect for your readers by making it difficult for them to read what you write. You exhibit selfishness and inconsideration ,which I interpret as bad manners, by responding as you have to myself and others. --- On Tue, 8/19/08, andrea brown <mlsw532000 wrote: andrea brown <mlsw532000Re: OT: good grammar Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 9:25 PM again what has happened to manners. it appears today that people simply feel its okay to articulate every little thing without regard to basic manners. mommy2threelilboys <mommyon731 (AT) (DOT) . com>Tuesday, August 19, 2008 7:42:20 PM[Health_and_ Healing] OT: good grammar**I am not specifically saying this as an attack to Andrea's post, noram I saying it in response to the comment made.** However, what has happened to our grammar, specifically in ourwriting? Guest guest
What is more important, the point one is trying to make or the grammer, although I try to use it correctly, my spelling may be bad or poor grouping of the correct words at times. To each his own, to discourage one from writting due to fear of making errors isn't much better. we're a large age group, I say let it be and figure it out on your own. Guest guest
Charming response Jude, thank you. If you have read my very first email about this, I wasn't asking to make sure the grammar was correct. I pointed out that the emails were hard to read because there are no sentences, just one block of lines. Before you all get your knickers in a knot about something I politely pointed out, read Tony's message. His has put it quite nicely. Guest guest
this conversation is annoying me immensely To be perfectly honest when an email arrives that I cannot read because of the size of the typeface....... I have vision problems .... I delete it (the original email that is the source of this conversation is an example of small print ...... I deleted it!) even if it had contained useful information.... hopefully it did.... I could NOT have read it in any case..... so what is my point? delete it if you don't like it.... can't read it etc........... or be kind to me (and maybe others????) who need you to type in a decent size font, carefully spaced etc so I/we can participate in this on line group. This email is typed in 14 point arial. Thank you Clare in Tas
Guest guest
Hi Mommy... I too try to write properly but I know oh so many people that think, " It is just an email... " . I saddens me that so many English teachers may have wasted their time teaching that which is hardly used. Then again, I seldom even mention it, even to my closest of friends. Sometimes, I may not capitalize a proper word, there is a reason other then just a mistake. Spell check tries to get me to correct what it thinks it should be but if I don't want to capitalize a word or two, then I won't. That is just me, everyone else has their own way of doing things, I just learn to live with it all. Guest guest
Once again, I sincerely never meant to offend anyone. Your response, Kenneth, helped me to understand what's going on here. You see, I was an English teacher for three years before becoming a mommy. I have a passion for speaking and writing, not perfectly necessarily, but intelligibly and legibly. Others have their passion too. The passion to make sure that children do not get lost in the system and don't grow up drugged is a very noble and honorable one. I commend that. Guest guest
If your email is set for plain text then you will undoubtedly get a smaller text size with no option to change it. I on the other hand opt for the html version and can change, fonts, colors, sizes and a plethora of other features as well as add pictures embedded in the message. Not all groups or people can see the html message the way that I send it but those that can, they get the bells and whistles the way that I send it to them. Some people don't like the html messages due to the security threats that it might give you. Take the good with the bad, I suppose. Guest guest
i'm just gonna post to all with one reply. i'm sitting here laughing out loud. really the attention i am getting is not really wanted but a good laugh even at my own expense is after all, a good laugh. i'm not really sure how my writing style is relevant to alternative health, or why some people seem to fixate on it, even more fascinating is how i some how ended up the bad guy here. perhaps you could print my posts, and correct them with a red pen to satisfy your needs without giving me constructive criticism, which i dont need and can absolutely take. with humor by the way. lets be clear , i was constructively critized , without invitation, and of course have every right to respond as it was directed at me. so if you dont like my writing style, i could care less go ahead and delete, if you make it a point to offer constructive criticism i dont want, tehn dont get your knickers in a knot ( loved that) when i respond. i had a fabulous english teacher and if i want to ,can write very well and, have and, got straight A's. i was phi beta kappa with a 4.0 in college and you may think i am offended however i am not, education affords me that luxury. my point is nit picking is junior high behavior. i can absoultey understand the passion of an english teacher and benefited from that passion greatly.hence the A. however, i am in a health and healing group and not an english class. lets keep our boundries in check.for those of you who defended the message i was trying to get across, your intelligence shows greatly and is the measure of a sound mind. let's suppose someone who was not afforded a wonderful education came in here asking for help or offering thier experience , and help, do we really want to waste time constructively criticizing them? who cares, its the message that matters for heaven's sake. now can we all move on to greater things? i'm getting bored. Guest guest
youi did a good thing andrea you created an awareness--- On Wed, 8/20/08, andrea brown <mlsw532000 wrote: andrea brown <mlsw532000Re: OT: good grammar Date: Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 12:24 AM i'm just gonna post to all with one reply. i'm sitting here laughing out loud. really the attention i am getting is not really wanted but a good laugh even at my own expense is after all, a good laugh. i'm not really sure how my writing style is relevant to alternative health, or why some people seem to fixate on it, even more fascinating is how i some how ended up the bad guy here. perhaps you could print my posts, and correct them with a red pen to satisfy your needs without giving me constructive criticism, which i dont need and can absolutely take. with humor by the way. lets be clear , i was constructively critized , without invitation, and of course have every right to respond as it was directed at me. so if you dont like my writing style, i could care less go ahead and delete, if you make it a point to offer constructive criticism i dont want, tehn dont get your knickers in a knot ( loved that) when i respond. i had a fabulous english teacher and if i want to ,can write very well and, have and, got straight A's. i was phi beta kappa with a 4.0 in college and you may think i am offended however i am not, education affords me that luxury. my point is nit picking is junior high behavior. i can absoultey understand the passion of an english teacher and benefited from that passion greatly.hence the A. however, i am in a health and healing group and not an english class. lets keep our boundries in check.for those of you who defended the message i was trying to get across, your intelligence shows greatly and is the measure of a sound mind. let's suppose someone who was not afforded a wonderful education came in here asking for help or offering thier experience , and help, do we really want to waste time constructively criticizing them? who cares, its the message that matters for heaven's sake. now can we all move on to greater things? i'm getting bored. Kenneth <plisca >Tuesday, August 19, 2008 11:41:02 PMRe: [Health_and_ Healing] OT: good grammarHi Mommy...I too try to write properly but I know oh so many people that think, "It is just an email...".I saddens me that so many English teachers may have wasted their time teaching that which is hardly used. Then again, I seldom even mention it, even to my closest of friends.Sometimes, I may not capitalize a proper word, there is a reason other then just a mistake. Spell check tries to get me to correct what it thinks it should be but if I don't want to capitalize a word or two, then I won't.That is just me, everyone else has their own way of doing things, I just learn to live with it all.Kenneth T----- Original Message ----- "mommy2threelilboys " <mommyon731 ><>Tuesday, August 19, 2008 19:42[Health_and_ Healing] OT: good grammar**I am not specifically saying this as an attack to Andrea's post, noram I saying it in response to the comment made.**However, what has happened to our grammar, specifically in ourwriting? People do not capitalize the first words of sentences, theydon't capitalize the word "I", they don't use punctuation, etc. Somepeople write in all caps. Guest guest
I don't write in often, but I would like to put my .02 on this. This is a group on the internet, ie. computer for most folks, which has a keyboard (similar to a typewriter). For this reason, I personally enjoy reading the posts written in a similar format as a typewritten letter. When I am texting, shortened words, lack of punctuation and capitals, as well as misspellings are ok. When I went through school, we were taught the proper etiquette for writing, which is a form of manners. Maybe that is no longer taught in other areas, but in the four regions of the US that we have lived, they still teach that way. It is just much easier to read when things are done properly. Amy P.S. I understand a few misspellings. My husband can not spell to save his life, and he is a professional, and I lost some ability to spell after a head injury. Jude Johnson <jjskinguru You go Andrea! I completely, completely agree. Manners and compassion for what you were writing about. Shame, shame, shame on them. andrea brown <mlsw532000 > gosh arent there more important things in life then wether i have the time to sit and spell check everything and make sure my grammer is correct. even if i was displeased with someones writing style i would hardly make such a fuss about it. in the modern era apparently " MANNERS " have fallen by the wayside as well. I agree. Writing is supposed to be a concise and precise way to communicate our thoughts. But in the modern era of shotcuts and text messaging shorthand writing has become a sloppy way of communicating so that we can bemoan that people keep misunderstanding us. Guest guest
Good grammar-My grammar sucks!-But let me point out, that when you take the effort to capitalize, and punctuate properly- you can write and therefore communicate wit much more impact!I had a guy who complained about how often I did something- I thing it was quotation marks- but my point for doing so, was for impact, and to highlight more forcefully what I was saying-If everything 'drones on'- there is only monotony! It's up to you - You are the one who will benefit most by punctuating properly-(As for 4.0 college- my daughter was GREAT in school, but rather dull head when it comes to reason, and actually thinking! Look around, our government and business's are full of 'college educated' people- how bright are they?I am not impressed, but It's great that you took the time to go through school
