Guest guest
Hubbie just got a copy of an ATKINS book with pages and pages of information and recipes for low carb eating/cooking..... not a bad idea as we do need to eat better etc..... What strained my brain was a biscotti recipe ... low carb of course that uses 18 EIGHTEEN packets of low carb sweetener.... err now here in Australia that would mean EIGHTEEN packets of splenda or equal right? I thought Atkins was healthy????? Is there an alernative? that is NOT poisionous? Comments appreciated Clare in Tasmania
Guest guest
A good low carb sweetener for baking is xylitol - aside from their toxic effects splenda and aspartame would not work well in providing the texture needed--- On Fri, 8/8/08, Clares Primus <mcharris wrote: Clares Primus <mcharris Dr Betty - Can you comment? Guest guest
Clare, in Australia they also have " Just Like Sugar " . You use it the same as sugar. If a recipe called for one teaspoon of sugar you could use one teaspoon full of Just Like Sugar which is just chicory and orange peel. (www.justlikesugarinc.com). Dr. Atkins called me years ago and did an outstanding newsletter against aspartame, with headings such as " Low Cal Weight Gain " and a " six pack of mental retardation " . After that I don't know what he wrote about but subsequently died. I'm glad Just Like Sugar is now in Australia. Here in the US they just started making the little packets for restaurants tables. We will be starting to try and get those poison packets of Equal and Splenda off restaurant tables with a new flyer for Aspartame Awareness Weekend, the first weekend after Labor Day. Guest guest
Tony, Xylitol is okay if used only in a small amount. If somebody used 18 packets of Xylitol they might have some problems. In large amounts people complain of cramps, diarrhea and bloating which is common to sugar alcohols. Guest guest
Tony I agree that people (in general) who have ultra sensitive intestines, should stay away from many (artificial) products.... this goes for me too......... and many so called natural products can also trigger ugly painful responses. Guest guest
Milk allergies, or more to the point, allergies to certain substances in the milk (ie lactose, casein) are often not associated with physical problems, or emotional problems. Only once have I come across a reference of dairy products being directly responsible for severe depression in some. A depression which can hit a person from one minute (feeling great with no worry under the sun ) to an utter mess with severe crying spells the next minute. Many medications also suggest not to use dairy whilst on the medication.
