Hubbie just got a copy of an ATKINS book with pages and pages of information and recipes for low carb eating/cooking..... not a bad idea as we do need to eat better etc.....

What strained my brain was a biscotti recipe ... low carb of course that uses 18 EIGHTEEN packets of low carb sweetener.... err now here in Australia that would mean EIGHTEEN packets of splenda or equal right?

I thought Atkins was healthy?????

Is there an alernative? that is NOT poisionous?

Comments appreciated

A good low carb sweetener for baking is xylitol - aside from their toxic effects splenda and aspartame would not work well in providing the texture needed--- On Fri, 8/8/08, Clares Primus <mcharris wrote:

Clare, in Australia they also have " Just Like

Sugar " . You use it the same as sugar. If a

recipe called for one teaspoon of sugar you could

use one teaspoon full of Just Like Sugar which is

just chicory and orange peel. (www.justlikesugarinc.com).

Dr. Atkins called me years ago and did an

outstanding newsletter against aspartame, with

headings such as " Low Cal Weight Gain " and a " six

pack of mental retardation " . After that I don't

know what he wrote about but subsequently

died. I'm glad Just Like Sugar is now in

Australia. Here in the US they just started

making the little packets for restaurants

tables. We will be starting to try and get those

poison packets of Equal and Splenda off

restaurant tables with a new flyer for Aspartame

Awareness Weekend, the first weekend after Labor Day.

All my best,

Betty

Atkins isn't healthy at all - you will lose weight - at what cost - don't think anyone every thought Atkins was healthy just good at reducing the size of the individual!

Tony, Xylitol is okay if used only in a small

amount. If somebody used 18 packets of Xylitol

they might have some problems. In large amounts

people complain of cramps, diarrhea and bloating

which is common to sugar alcohols.

If a person eats two packets of xylitol per serving it usually does not cause problems. Other sugar alcohols are more problematic--- On Fri, 8/8/08, Dr. Betty Martini,D.Hum. <bettym19 wrote:

Neither Atkins or South Beach are good long term diets - South Beach contains too much dairy and Atkins too much soy. Part of their premise is that dieing people do not tend to gain weight--- On Fri, 8/8/08, Jane MacRoss <highfield1 wrote:

sorry Jane..... I rephrase that

I thought eating Low Carb was healthy....................

Course I also have the additional problem of eating gluten free and milk free

tiz fun (NOT) finding low carb, healthy, gluten free things like biscotti recipe's

I found the Australian Just Like Sugar Site and am getting a sample to try

Cost would need to be factored in of course... and making jam with it????? dunno

Sugar is a preservative factor in jam making I seem to remember.

Since your reaction is rare I can only suppose that the combination with milk is what is lethal. People with intestinal sensitivity should not be using any cow's milk products. The type of caseine in milk is highly inflammatory/--- On Fri, 8/8/08, Jane MacRoss <highfield1 wrote:

Tony I agree that people (in general) who have ultra sensitive intestines, should stay away from many (artificial) products.... this goes for me too.........

and many so called natural products can also trigger ugly painful responses.

Milk allergies, or more to the point, allergies to certain substances in

the milk (ie lactose, casein) are often not associated with

physical problems, or emotional problems.

Only once have I come across a reference of dairy products being

directly responsible for severe depression in some. A depression

which can hit a person from one minute (feeling great with no worry under

the sun ) to an utter mess with severe crying spells the next

minute. Many medications also suggest not to use dairy

whilst on the medication.
