Any hope for a schitzophrenic?

A friend of mine was dosed with 30 hits of acid by a "friend"

of his on his birthday 4 years ago. He didn't know he was being dosed

and this so called friend just wanted him to have some fun. Up until

that point he was perfectly normal, happy person. Now doctors and

psychiatrists have told him he is hopeless and will never find a cure

for his extreme anxiety and paranoia and depression. He doesn't know

what to do since even the doctors feel there is no hope for him to ever

get better...he's pretty much giving up. Are they right? Is he

hopeless? Is there any articles/books you could recommend we read for

him to try some kind of alternative remedy? Any help would be

appreciated.
