Hello All.

Valorie here.

Doc and I recently got back from a trip to Tennessee and Kentucky. The

purpose of our trip was to gather information

on self sufficient ways to live and grow food. These things included:

solar heating and power, human waste treatment

back to clean water, growing food in domes and outside gardens, seeing

adobe homes being built from straw and mud,

and talking to lots of people regarding what works and what does not.

One place we visited was The Farm in Tennessee. If you want more info

on this project you can pull it up on the

internet. While at The Farm, we came across an excellent book entitled

*_Gaia's Garden - A Guide to Home-Scale_*

_*Permaculture*_. Permaculture means the deveopment of agricultural

eco-systems intended to be sustainable and self sufficient.

An example of an eco-system would be taking a handful of mud from a

swamp, a handful of mud from a cow drinking

hole, and a handful of mud from a forest. If you put these three

handfuls of mud into a gallon jar and put a lid on it, soon

you would have a whole life exhibit before your eyes that would change

daily and monthly and over the years as long as

it had sufficient sun light. This " life " is an example of an

eco-system. The same thing can occur and should in a garden.

The idea here is to let nature do the work - work with not against

nature. This type of a garden balances the needs of

humans and nature.

Two reviews:

in part " practical science for making your yard produce food as well as

beauty, pulling together vegetable lots, flower

gardens, the wildlife-friendly fragments into one thriving ecosystem. "

" There is so much wisdom in_ Gais's Garden _that I would need a dozen

columns to do it justice . . . a bold, wonderful,

nature-embracing and completely sensible vision of the future. "

I'm having tremendous fun reading this book and I recommend it to you.

Yours in Knowledge, Health and Freedom,

Valorie
