Guest guest
Finally, Whole Foods is getting busted!! <from Will Winter, founder of the Holistic Veterinarian Association and frequent speaker at sustainable ag conferences. -AB) FOOD FIGHT! As you probably know, Whole Foods has been sittin' fat and happy for years, making oodles of money, and nobody was the wiser. Many upwardly-mobile shoppers bragged about shopping at WF. That was then. Now people are reading Michael Pollan's blockbuster book THE OMNIVORES DILEMMA which has lit matches between the toes of the food giant! YOW! The book was one of the first mainstream publications to bust them for their quasi-fradulent and WalMart-like buying and selling tendencies. WF has been sputtering and spluttering ever since, trying to redeem what's left of their reputation. Their $1/2 billion acquisition last week of WILD OATS -their only real competition- makes them look even more like kissin' cousins of the Sopranos. Every time MP is quoted here or there (see his op-ed in the January 28th, 2007 NYT for example) WF sinks a bit further into the slime. Now the WF CEO will enter into a public debate with MP. This sure-to-be-better-than-the-Oscars event will be broadcast live on the web tomorrow night. NAUGHTY TIP: BE SURE to buy a copy of this Wednesday's NYT and read the related article that will appear in the Food Section. When you read it you will see why. _ Presented by: The Graduate School of Journalism The Past, Present, and Future of Food This event is SOLD OUT. If you do not have a ticket, please join us for a live web cast of this event in the North Gate Hall Library. When: TUESDAY February 27, 2007, 7:00 pm -- 9:00 pm (West Coast time-2 hrs. later than MN) This event will be webcast live. The co- founder and CEO of Whole Foods, John Mackey will offer a multimedia presentation of the past, present, and future of food. John Mackey will then join Michael Pollan in conversation, continuing in person the exchange of views the two have been conducting since the publication of Pollan's 2006 book, "The Omnivore's Dilemma." Their correspondence, which has explored such issues as organic and local food, animal agriculture, and the role of Whole Foods, is available at http://www.wholefoods.com/ blogs/jm/ and http://www.michaelpollan.com/article.php?id=80 510.642.9988 Event contact: Novella Carpenter novellacarpenter ________________________________ More details to follow, in fact, I'm checking into it but I heard an announcement on MN PUBLIC RADIO that JOHN MACKEY will be on the air tonight (he was on the MPR Money show yesterday. I heard it and it sounded to me like he was scrambling). Will Winter
