Guest guest
Definitions Knowing what words mean, allows us to communicate with each other so that understanding can take place. Most of the definitions that follow, have been taken out of the Oxford American Dictionary as-is, or have been modified by myself to explain a particular herbal concept. I hope these help one and all. Naturopathy: The science or art of treating a disease by addressing the CAUSE, using Nutrition, Exercise, Sunlight, Clean Air, Pure Water, Massage, Hydrotherapy (both Hot & Cold), Confront, Prayer, Meditation, Lifestyle, Biochemistry (which includes vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc.), and correcting any imbalances found. Menstruum: a solvent; a liquid which is used to extract active ingredients. Extract: a preparation containing the active ingredient of a substance in concentrated form: Vanilla extract. Tincture: a medicine or remedy made by extracting an herb, a compound, or another substance in alcohol or vinegar. Dropperful: (one of the least understood words since just about every herbalist has his own definition for it) To standardize this term, I decided to experiment with 3 different bottle and dropper sizes (same diameter, different lengths). The end result was this. A Dropperful is: One squeeze of the rubber top and fills the glass tube about 1¾ inches equaling about 18 drops. Tonic: a medicinal substance taken to give a feeling of vigor or well-being. Poultice: a soft, moist mass of material, typically made of plant material, applied to the body to relieve soreness and inflammation and kept in place with a cloth or a bandage. Powder: fine dry particles produced by the grinding, crushing, or the disintegration of a solid substance. Formula: a list of ingredients for something. That which makes up a particular recipe. Supplement: something that completes or enhances something else when added to it: a substance taken to remedy the deficiencies in a person's diet: Vitamin supplements. Metabolism: the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life. There are two kinds of metabolism: ¯ Destructive Metabolism, which is the breakdown of complex substances and the consequent production of energy and waste matter. Digestion. There is a real chemical burning that takes place. ¯ Constructive Metabolism, which is the end result of mixing the proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that form tissue and store energy. The action of building bodies.
