Guest guest
To all parents with kids who are going trick or treating. I know parents who plan a time to go shopping with their kids either right after trick or treating (if it's not too late) or the next day first thing or right after school. They get the kids agreement ahead of time that they will buy the candy from them and then they can spend the money on whatever they want on the shopping spree. Read the idea below that could work well with smaller children. This one can work for older kids who might not believe in the " Ghost of Halloween " . There are probably a number of ways to get agreement on not eating all that sugar. I know a private school that is closed the day after halloween. They tried getting the parents to control the sugar and when they were unsuccessful they just decided to let the kids be wild and crazy at home. I guess their viewpoint was if the parents allowed it the parents could deal with the consequences. Be creative. It's well worth it. Sugar isn't spooky it's scary! No wonder they give it out at H-Day. We don't give it to our children and we see big differences and others are constantly saying how even tempered, etc. they are... now I think that also has to do with up-bringing, but that doesn't account for all of it. We also don't want to turn into something like the latest Willy Wonka Dad that was a dentist and kept all candy, and thus the fun, from his kid. They should be allowed to socialize with others their age and enjoy the holidays. We came up with something that we think balances it out. It is kind of like Santa and the tooth fairy combined. Our daughters can collect the candy, go to the parties and all that. The difference is they don't eat the candy when they get it. Instead they gather it all up and the ghost of Holloween (don't tell our kids, but this is me:) comes and exchanges it for books, toys, and a lot of healthy goodies that they love. Sounds a little different, but we like it and it gives them the fun and socialization without the bad health effects. I have to admit that it was my wife's idea, but we both love it:) -Adam Baumgardner
