Russell High School Principal Dick Kloppel has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of partner or family member assault.Police arrested Kloppel late Friday and he was released on a $585 bond over the weekend. He appeared in Municipal Court on Monday.Police Sgt. Glen Stinar said Monday the victim was injured, but not severely."It was not serious or life-threatening," Stinar said.Police do not release victims' identities.A CMR student, who was riding along with police Friday night as part of a "street law" class, saw Kloppel as he left a cell at the detention center."You never see a high school principal in jail," CMR senior Kendra Allen said. She said Kloppel asks students to refrain from violence."He preaches to everybody all the time about how violence isn't the answer," Allen said.A district official encouraged the public to avoid jumping to conclusions."We're just hoping people will keep an open mind until the facts are known," said Dick Kuntz, assistant superintendent for secondary grades.Kuntz said district officials will withhold further comment until they learn more about the case.Kloppel has worked for the Great Falls school district since 1970, minus a year he spent in Lewistown to gain experience as a school administrator. He has worked as a science teacher, a math teacher, a middle school principal and, starting in 2000, as the principal of CMR.A pretrial hearing is set for Jan. 8.
