Guest guest
My health has been suffering lately to the point that I really needed the involvement of a doctor - which has turned into doctorS. The latest round of blood work came back with good results - the first good news I have had in a while. However it did show low potassium. So, I began to research low potassium and foods that are high in potassium so I could modify my diet and hopefully avoid a prescription. I discovered that many of the foods I have been absolutely craving recently (before I got the blood work results back) are high in potassium. I don't usually crave food - unless I'm pregnant - but lately I can't get enough edamame, sardines, and eggs. I thought it was a protein issue until the blood work. Has anyone else found themselves craving particular foods associated with a deficiency? Any suggestions on how to get my potassium up? Guest guest
Orange Juice, broccoli, dry beans are all good sources of potassium. And Yes our bodies do tell us what we need, but far too many of us have forgotten how to listen( not in this group of course ) Thursday, September 21, 2006, 11:14:15 AM, you wrote: > My health has been suffering lately to the point that I really needed > the involvement of a doctor - which has turned into doctorS. Guest guest
Vicky, I knew I was pregnant with my second son (who is now 24) when I woke up one morning craving broccoli. Potassium is so widely available in both fruits and vegetables that there must be something else contributing to your deficiency, unless you just don't eat F's and V's. Are you taking diuretics or oral contraceptives? Do you drink lots of coffee or soda? Any med or substance that makes you pee a lot can interfere with nutrient absorption. Many spices also contain potassium in their seeds. It may the sign of a mineral imbalance. Keep studying and eating what you crave. Talk is cheap. Use Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Guest guest
Most people are actually low in potassium due to eating too much processed foods. In many countries you can by 600mg potassium tablets over the counter. NOT IN THE US though. However, there is a great substitute. Go to the supermarket and get the low sodium chicken (or beef bullioun) (Brand names: herb ox and wylers). A serving of those broths have 500mg of potassium. How low will we go? Guest guest
Speaking of pregnancy - I would crave brocolli too. I never crave sweets of fatty food unless I'm in the last trimester of a pregnancy. At first, I would deny myself but then read about how the baby was trying to gain that fatty layer just beneath the skin so he/she could regulate her body temperature once on the outside. I decided to just go with it - my weight was in check anyway - and enjoyed fresh baked cookies almost every evening! Don't really even want them now. I believe my potassium deficiency has to do with my other health issues which caused 'digestive' problems for over a year. Since I began treatment the digestive problems have cleared up. I do drink coffee everyday (the one part of my day I look forward to)and really don't want to give it up. No soda or meds you described, eat f's and v's, but have been sick a lot the past few years and have been on lots of anti-biotics (can't really help that). I believe in your 'eat what you crave' advice. thanks vicki
Guest guest
My body is so happy with me right now (and I with it) but it's been a long,, bumpy road full of stomach and colon oscopies, mri's and x- rys, etc. Many drugs cause our food to just run through us. I am so done with going to doctors. Never will do it again. Hope your health improves quickly, Ele Stay in the know. Pulse on the new .com. Check it out.
