I teach at a college that also has a school of pharmacy and some of the pharmacy profs will agree more with herbs than with nasty drugs (which they freely admit are nasty). Also, there is a glass case on the pharmacy floor and they have many old bottles of medicines from the first half of the 20th century. There are asafoetida (an indian herb) tablets, gum resin tablets, valerian tablets and extracts of many herbs. We just had a discussion today about fiber in the diet and how it decreases cholesterol, blood sugar and colon problems (all without drugs).

I don't mean to sound negative or judgmental...but my hope would be that pharmaceutical and drug companies would stick to making their drugs and leave herbs and natural remedies alone....should they come back to the realization of how well natural methods work, they will then find a way to control the distribution of them, making remedies prescription so they can get their cut....you know...the ole mightily dollar signs in their eyes....no offense to you personally...just going on past history and the destruction of many good things by those motivated by the love of money...I love that we are able to go to our local health food store or grow what our bodies need without the interference of government or big business....so far that is! Sincerely, Val

Valinda, what I am saying is that 60 yrs ago, many of the medications used were actual herbs/tinctures/extracts etc. Do not worry about the medicos/drug companies using herbs. You CANNOT patent an herb or extract, only a pure compound. What you do have to worry about is the drug companies making herbs illegal. (They did this with ma huang, quinine was pulled off the market because it was cheap and had many uses, ananase (the pineapple enzyme Bromelian) was pulled because it was too good for many conditions that newer more expensive drugs were used for)
