I really can sympathize with the big

spiders! We have had good success with

keeping out smaller ones (and possibly big ones) using cinnamon around where

they might be coming in and then I also have sprinkled Borax around the outside

perimeter of my home. I think it’s working! I

haven’t had any of the huge wolf spiders in awhile. (cross your fingers

for me!)

We put osage oranges around in the house. We find them along the

country roads. Toss them away when they dry up

The best thing that I have found is to use osage oranges. Cut them in half and put them, into far corners or in places where no sees or can get to them. If you have small children or animals, place them under the house at the corners. Works well for me and I have never had any problems with them. Marsha

Where can I find osage oranges? They don't grow here. I'm in the WV mountains. Thanks for the suggestion though. Osage oranges or "hedge apples" are reputed to ward off everything from possums to cockroaches. I have known many folks who rolled the goofy things under their house, etc. I don't believe they repel anything at all, though. Some of them seem to last awhile, some seem to fall apart quickly. The juicier "hedge apples" have a sort of latex or milky sap when sliced into. Wonder if someone had a large "press" and bottled some of that sap, if it would be good for anything?

Osage oranges are from Burdock trees. They are a very ugly large fruit that falls from the trees. I thought they grew about everywhere but I might be wrong. You can check with the local Co-op to see if they do grow around you, and then maybe you might find someone with a tree that will give you some. They are a nuisance but my farm animals love them and they keep parasites out of the animals. I could mail you some, but I am not sure if they are allowed to be sent to your state, in some places they are banned. The local Co-op can tell you if they are. Marsha

Hi Melanie & All, Thanks for your reply. Can't find osage oranges but the cinnamon and borax are accessible. But I have an inside cat and live on a farm which has horses, chickens, dogs & outside cats. Would either the cinammon or borax be harmful to them?
