Guest guest
UF going organic, at least when it comes to majors offered Gainesville, Florida - Everyone is switching to organic these days, including the University of Florida. The university will become one of the first in the country to offer an organic farming major. A class in organic crop production is being offered for the first time this fall semester as part of the program. Organic farming is the production of crops and livestock without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides and artificial techniques. Once a niche market, organic foods have gone mainstream in recent years, accounting for $13.8 billion in consumer sales in 2005. Program heads say Gainesville is an especially good market for organic growers because it is a progressive college community with five area farmer's markets. If they're learning about organic farming chances are they will be educated on genetically modified crops and all the evils--the more education on this the better!
