Guest guest
From a beginner's point of view, Gina may want to offer her input about her lotion/cream making experiences. To help you get started, I have some basic information listed below. A Cream or lotion can simply be made with oils, liquids and an emulisifier. If you were wondering about some of the ingredients Gina mentioned, here is a brief explanation: Emulsifying Wax (e-wax) is used to bind oil and water together to avoid separation in creams and lotions. Stearic Acid is naturally derived from soybeans. Helps to bind and thicken creams Vegetable glycerin is a natural humectant- it helps draw moisture to the skin. Borax is used as an emulsifying agent in lotions and creams. Cosmetic grade borax is recommended over Mule Team brand. When using liquids for the cream, I first make an herbal or floral infusion. An infusion is made by pouring hot water over herbs and letting them steep. Depending on your skin type you can use: Calendula- healing, soothing properties Lavender- antiseptic, antifungal, good for skin Rose petals- moisturizers & acts as a tonic Chamomile- mild astringent, fragrant Lemongrass- Clarifying tonic for oily skin Rosemary- stimulating, antiseptic Sage- clarifying, astringent Herbal Cream Recipe 1/2 cup dried herbs or flowers OR 1 cup fresh herbs or flowers Place herbs in a glass bowl or pitcher. Pour 1/2 cup boiling distilled water over herbs. Cover and allow to cool. Strain liquid. 1/4 cup melted beeswax 1/4 cup lanolin 1/2 cup almond oil 1/2 teaspoon borax Warm beeswax, lanolin and oil in a double boiler until melted. Dissolve borax in strained infusion; slowly combine infusion with oil mixture and whisk to consistency of heavy cream. Pour into a clean jar. cool and cover. Notes: these ingredients can be purchased at a health food store. Ask for unbleached, natural beeswax (grated or pellets will melt quicker) Lanolin will be very thick- like a wax. Buy 100% pure lanolin- no additives. To make it creamy you need e-wax and steric acid, you add that to butter creams and oils and melt it down together and there you go, what a difference in moisturizer. After you use your own you will never want anything else. > > Gina > > pam couchman <freya_freya2000 wrote: > Hi everyone I would be gratful for some advice I am 56 with dry skin > and living in the uk.
