My sleep habits were often over ten hours in bed and still sleepy during the day, especially driving in the mountains on curving roads. I could not watch a movie due to going to sleep and snoring, embarrassing in a theater. I was tired all the time. I became short tempered and nasty to everyone. My wife became concerned when she was awakened by my snoring and she noticed I would stop breathing momentarily and then continue snoring after gagging. The body will trigger a muscle twitch bringing you out of REM sleep when oxygen levels get too low therefore you do not get enough sleep. I too suffered from sleep apnea. Untreated sleep apnea can cause brain damage from a reduced supply of oxygen to the brain. Short term memory loss becomes apparent. I had to take the overnight hospital test before my insurance company would pay for a CPAP machine and oxygen. The test I took showed my oxygen levels(from not breathing)were below normal for 83% of the 8 hour test and 90% of that time was dangerously low oxygen levels below 50. My sleeping habits changed drastically after I was on the CPAP machine with 3L of oxygen. Six to eight hours was refreshing and I stopped nodding off during the day. I awoke feeling mentally alert and optimistic for the day. My short term memory started coming back slowly. I was able quit taking naps during the day. My wife was ecstatic due to her being able to sleep all night again without my loud continuous snoring.
