Guest guest
Hello again ! Freezing is good as you still have live enzymes in the food. When you get the freezer, I recommend that you do not purchase a "frost free" type as these warm up to melt the ice. At the same time they melt the ice, they thaw the food a bit and after awhile this warming and cooling ruins the fresh quality of the food. The draw back to the ones that build up the ice is that you do have to manually defrost them perhaps several times a year. I think it depends on how often you open and close the freezer. Anyway I dislike the "frost free" ones. I'll let you know if I can help with co-op trucks. These are normally not good for produce as they do not even carry much if any. I used to get cases of oranges and several other fruits were available from time to time but never any vegetables. Do you or can you grow some of your own? Currently we have Saturday market in Tillamook about 11 miles from us and I get lots of good stuff there. But during the winter it takes a trip to the valley, Portland, OR to get supplies if we want good produce and fruit. Actually they have fresher and more variety there but it's such a trip. I don't mind it as long as the roads are okay. I'm looking into getting a freezer to freeze fruits and produce so we can have it during the winter. I actually have done this on a small level (refrigerator has a freezer) but it fills up quickly. We are sold on organic food. Both my husband and myself have been victims of medico. Love and light to you. Micki - Valorie Shillington Micki Monday, July 03, 2006 2:09 PM Re: Organic Foods co-op questions Dear Micki, All the additional data helps. We lived in Sheridan just West of McMinniville for a couple of years so know your area a bit. The coast was about a 45 minute drive. Very pretty country !! I've visited Tillamook. Your summer set up sounds ideal. I'd sure be there every week. You might want to go on the internet to check and see if the Mountain People come into Oregon. I heard that they may have been purchased and I'm not sure of the new name. I'll check with come contacts in California. If you aren't already, read the names and signs on the trucks you see delivering in your area. Sometime you can come up with a good source this way. Are you looking for anything in particular? I used the Tucson Co-operative Warehouse when we lived in the middle of the mountains in New Mexico. I'm sure that they do not go into Oregon. We are very close to Tillamook, Oregon (famous for their cheese) about 11 miles away and they have a farmers market on Saturday's. We also have the farmer's co-op and they always have yummy organic produce and fruit during the summer months, they let different farms come in and sell from the back of their pickups. It's a wonderful place and so many people are going organic. I'm an old hippie and have been organic since the 60's. I've gone through different stages with eating white chicken, turkey and fish only, no animal fat as when we use dairy products we use fat free organic products. But I'm super careful about the source, I just don't trust many packagers. We haven't eaten red meat or Pork since the 60's. We do have a difficult time when we go to potlucks or to someone's home to eat. However everyone knows we are vegetarian and they try to compensate for it. I take yummy dishes to the potlucks and if we don't dish up quickly they are gone, everyone seems to love organic food. Okay, you only ask where I live, sorry to write so much. Love and light to you my dear. Micki - Valorie Shillington Micki Saturday, July 01, 2006 9:11 AM Re: Organic Foods co-op questions Hi Micki ! For starters, what city and state are you in ? Hope it goes through this time... *** Start your own Co-op if you have to. When Valorie and I lived in New Mexico, we lived in Catron County so far from civilization that there wasn't one traffic light in the whole county. Catron County is the second largest in NM and the sixth largest in the US. My wife valorie started her own. It can be done. You can email her at: Valorie (AT) AcdemyOfNaturalHealing (DOT) com if you need the particulars. In Health, Freedom, and Love, Doc *** Hello Valorie, Doc said we could email you about starting our own co-op. We do have a local farmer's market and there are a group of us that want to get more organized. Any suggestions from you would be most welcome.
