Doc, I have a friend whose wife gives the kids (ages 8 and 6) echinacea every day and has been doing this since they were a few weeks old (echinacea in formula). Now both kids have severe allergies and asthma. I am curious if the echinacea treatment for too long overactivated their immune systems.

Dear Tony,

Absolutely!!!!

Echinacea is one of those herbs you need to take a break from.

Unless one is doing some intensive cleansing, the best regimen with Echinacea is one week on and one week off. Now this is taking into consideration that one is handling some adverse condition or is preparing for the onslaught of a pandemic. One doesn't take just any old herb for just no reason. One is either handling a condition or the threat of serious outbreak before one starts using certain herbs in a healing manner.

Taking Echinacea for such a long time is like turning on the ignition of your car and keeping the key turned over even after the engine has started. Eventually, you'll burn out your starter motor. Same thing with Echinacea taken for too long a period.

Other herbs like Garlic or Spirulina, can be taken in moderation till the cows come home.

Hope this helps.

In Health, Freedom, and Love,

Doc
