Environmental Medicine: International Appeal From Würzburg

At the invitation of the European Academy for Environmental Medicine –

EUROPAEM for a medical conference met from 23.04. – 25.04. 2010 in Würzburg,

Germany , many renowned national and international scientists from the areas

of environmental health, toxicology, immunology, neurology and human

genetics, medical practitioners, dentists, other health professionals, and

representatives of patient initiatives were in attendance. The theme of this

international medical conference was " Science Meets Practice " . It dealt

specifically with the issues of Neuro-endocrinology , immunology, and their

importance in environmental medicine.

The participants noted with great concern the increasing prevalence of

chronic multi-system illnesses such as, multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS),

chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), cardiovascular

diseases, metabolic syndrome, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune

diseases and cancer.

At the conference it was impressively demonstrated that pathological

mechanisms are the reasons for these chronic diseases. The mechanisms are

common chronic inflammatory processes, the chemicals involved in environmental

factors (pollutants) , biological (i.e. infectious agents) and physical

(i.e. electromagnetic fields EMF) which can be triggers.

Chronic diseases mean long-term patients, who will have ever higher

medical care costs. This often means that the affected people are socially

excluded.

Despite appalling reports of Europe's growing financial constraints,

especially in public health, and the collapse of the public health system in

Europe, nevertheless, an increase of chronic diseases is already under way, but

the remedy is here. A change of priorities is needed from unilaterally

symptomatic oriented medicine, to causally oriented medicine focusing on cost

-effective primary prevention.

The conference participants made an urgent appeal to the European

environment and health ministers, to the European Commission, the European

parliamentarians, national governments and to the directors of social and

private

insurances, that they give serious consideration of these findings and

developments, meaning more emphasis and financial investment in prevention

first, then screening and possible early detection and diagnosis of these

chronic, environment related illnesses.

This generally means a European level a full enjoyment of the research env

ironment of practicing environmental medicine and its integration into

university research and teaching. The European governments are asked to ratify

the decisions of the fourth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health

Ministers in Budapest, 2004, and finally put this into action.

This appeal was unanimously adopted by the majority of the conference par

ticipants.
