Guest guest
> Hello~ > > do any of you use/practice yoga as an alternative or compliment to your current treatment of health issues? > Yes, I think everybody would benefit tremendously from it. Specific yoga breathing programs reduce free radical damage in the body (oxidative stress) and inflammatory cytokines. Also, they reduce psychosocial stress which contributes with aging and chronic diseases through free radical mechanisms. It also stimulates the vagus nerve: http://www.subtleyoga.com/220/ It is a low risk, cost effective adjunct treatment that can be potentially applied to improve symptoms associated with cardiovascular disorders, autonomic disorders, and psychological disorders including those involving stress. With slow control breathing there is a noted increase in parasympathetic activity (the relaxing system) and a decrease in sympathetic dominance (the stress response). The practice of voluntary breath control, consisting of conscious inhalation, retention, and exhalation in conjunction with meditation and belly breathing has beneficial applications in treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, pulmonary disease such as asthma, autonomic nervous system imbalances and psychological or stress related disorders. It is not only therapeutic, but also preventative. They also decrease symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome by enhancing parasympathetic activity of the gastrointestinal tract and by reducing effects of stress, and it increases plasticity of motor control indicating that it might have applications in rehabilitation programs. Stimulation of the vagus nerve is also a treatment of epilepsy and depression. There are several yoga breathing programs, but my absolute favorite is the following technique: http://eiriu-eolas.org/about/ You can learn how to do it and the science behind it in the above link for free. It includes well-known stress control breathing techniques that stimulate the Vagus nerve as well as emotional releasing techniques developed by Carl Jung and promoted by Alexander Lowen: bio-energetic breathing (more info about it here: http://saveyourself.ca/articles/breathing.php) Best, Navigante
Guest guest
I have done and taught Kundalini Yoga for over 35 years and it is my main alternative therapy I use. I had asthma when I started doing yoga many years ago. My mom was amazed that my nose was not constantly running from hay fever last summer when I visited her. She asked what I do. I told her yoga, diet and herbs. She uses antihistamines and inhalers to combat her hay fever. I also substitute teach in the public schools and sometimes PE. I do the same exercises as the students. They are a little bewildered to see a 61 YO man doing splits. )) GB > Hello~ > > do any of you use/practice yoga as an alternative or compliment to your current treatment of health issues? >
