Punch No. 1: Debate on Codex with FAO A group of leading academics in the northern English University of Lancaster invited ANH executive director, Dr Robert Verkerk, to debate Codex Alimentarius, the controversial international guidelines that provide the rules for the global food trade. Dr Verkerk's opposite number in the debate was none other than the head of food quality for the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, Dr Ezzeddine Boutrif. Find out what happened in our news story below. Punch No. 2: ANH announces new legal challenge on herbs Many of you will be aware of the huge crisis facing some of the world's longest established medical traditions, such as those of either Ayurveda and Unani from the Indian subcontinent, as well as those of China, often referred to as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). A European directive designed to regulate these kinds of products, passed into law in 2004 and is due to bite fully as of April 2011. The legislation is so badly conceived it is almost impossible for significant numbers of classical herbal products from these traditions to be licensed under this regime. It is also likely that a considerable number of products from European and western traditions could be impacted by this directive. Therefore, following a two-day conference in Hungary last week, sponsored by the Indian government, the ANH announced its intent to challenge the law in the courts. We've done it before and we will do it again. The ANH urgently needs support from parties who are likely to be influenced by the directive. Please contact us if you are interested in supporting this challenge, financially or otherwise. We greatly value hearing also from parties from outside of Europe who believe they will be adversely impacted by the directive in 2011 and after. Punch No. 3: ANH published new risk analysis study in leading scientific journal Moving from law to science, today we have announced the publication of a second study critiquing the proposed EU approach to restricting maximum vitamin and mineral doses for supplements throughout the Europe’s 27 member states. Our press release has gone out today. We ask concerned Europeans to sign our petition and write to your MEP, expressing your concerns. Please find an example of a letter that you can use as a basis for your own letter. You can find out how to find your MEP here as well as his or her e-mail address and other contact details. If you can manage to meet with your MEP face-to-face, even better. We need your help (and you need ours!) All of this work involves a huge amount of effort on the part of ANH International’s small team. Our work on EU issues is for the benefit of people around the world. The EU regime is being looked at by regulators all over the world as a key template – and recent events show us just what a threat Euro-style laws might be to the hard-won liberal system of the USA. Our legal expenses will be high this year as we move towards the legal challenge to help protect non-European herbal traditions in particular, but also those of western herbalism that rely on manufactured, polyherbal products. All of our funding comes from donations. If you feel that our work is important, please consider making a donation. Monthly donations, however, small, are invaluable. We urgently need your help to undertake this extraordinarily time-sensitive work that we believe is of great importance, not only for so many of us today, but also for so many more in the future.
