Lisa Murkowski of Alaska is launching a potentially devastating attack on the Clean Air Act. Majority Leader Harry Reid has granted her a vote for January 20 that would block the EPA from regulating greenhouse gas emissions from coal plants and other polluters in 2010. The vote — on an amendment to a must-pass bill to lift the debt ceiling — will remove the EPA's enforcement funding and power so big polluters like the coal industry can ignore the Clean Air Act. You would think this would be easy to stop, but the vote is predicted to be close with many Democrats considering voting for the bill. This attack is a rerun of the successful efforts by Newt Gingrich to hamstring the Clinton EPA in the 90s. Senators Wyden and Merkley need to hear from you. We'll make sure your name and comments are delivered to them along with a strong message: Save the Clean Air Act. _Add your name to PROTECT THE CLEAN AIR ACT and STOP MURKOWSKI._ (http://act.credoaction.com/r/?r=5161 & id=7318-2561265-Ee.XbHx & t=5) Republican and Democratic senators alike need to hear from you. The coal industry has been working furiously to close deals with senators across the political spectrum, including those who say they want to protect the environment. We cannot underestimate the Senate's vulnerability to cynical attempts to handcuff the EPA. The Murkowski amendment — which blocks the EPA from taking any action for the next year — is simply unacceptable. Tell your Senators Wyden and Merkley to vote " no " on this and any other attempt to handcuff EPA during this time of climate crisis. The Senate vote on January 20th will be a defining moment in the fight for meaningful and immediate action to address climate change. _You can help change the outcome of the vote by taking action today. _ (http://act.credoaction.com/r/?r=5161 & id=7318-2561265-Ee.XbHx & t=6) You can make a difference today, Michael Kieschnick, President _CREDO Action from Working Assets _ (http://act.credoaction.com/r/?r=11 & id=7318-2561265-Ee.XbHx & t=7) P.S. If you are sick and tired of senators and other elected officials hiding behind their anti-environment votes in the name of the economy, remind them our economic future is in transition to clean energy. The green economy will create millions of jobs and prevent economic devastation caused by the impacts of climate change and global warming.
