Guest guest
Hi Casey, Make sure you do your research on the treatments you are offered. Some of them (like hormone injections) produce a hypo-estrogenic state - i.e. false menopause - in order to stop or reduce symptoms. These can lead to menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and osteoporosis. First - I suggest you get this book (and maybe some others): Endometriosis: A Key to Healing Through Nutrition by Dian Shepperson Mills and Michael Vernon http://www.amazon.com/Endometriosis-Key-Healing-Through-Nutrition/dp/0007133103/\ ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8 & s=books & qid=1262851778 & sr=8-1 There are several books if you search for them. These things have been shown to help: 1) Omega 3 essential fatty acids - fish oil capsules and/or oily fish like salmon and mackerel 2-3 times per week - this reduces inflammation (pain) REF: Yano Y. Effect of dietary supplementation with eicosapentaenoic acid on surgically induced endometriosis in the rabbit. Nippon Sanka Fujinka Gakkai Zasshi 1992 Mar;44(3):282–8 [in Japanese]. REF: Covens AL, Christopher P, Casper RF. The effect of dietary supplementation with fish oil fatty acids on surgically induced endometriosis in the rabbit. Fertil Steril 1988;49:698–703. 2) reduce red meat in your diet (reduce arachidonic acid in your diet, thus reducing inflammation) 3) Cut caffeine out of your diet - caffeine can impair estrogen metabolism in the body (endometriosis is an estrogen-sensitive condition) REF: Grodstein F, Goldman MB, Ryan L, Cramer DW. Relation of female infertility to consumption of caffeinated beverages. Am J Epidemiol 1993;137:1353–60. 4) get regular exercise and/or reduce excess body weight (excess fat tissues produce their own estrogen) 5) supplement Vitamins C and E (antioxidants have been shown to reduce pain) REF: Johnson K. Antioxidant therapy quickly improves endometriosis pain. Fam Pract News 2004(March 15):75 [News report]. 6) Vitamins C and E (plus a good multivitamin / mineral esp. with zinc) also support the immune system - women with endometriosis have higher incidence of autoimmune diseases). Because of this - if I were you - I would have my thyroid hormones and antibodies checked: T3, T4, TSH, and thyroid antibodies. REF: Sinaii N, Cleary SD, Ballweg ML, Nieman LK, Stratton P (2002) High rates of autoimmune and endocrine disorders, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and atopic diseases among women with endometriosis: a survey analysis. Human Reproduction. 17(10): 2715-24. 7) Eat a higher fibre diet with whole grains, lots of fruits and veg, minimised refined carbohydrates such as pasta, bread and white rice, and reduce sugars in the diet. Firstly, higher fibre diet leads to better estrogen metabolism and clearance in the body. Secondly eating refined carbohydrates and sugars leads to spikes of insulin in the blood which can stimulate higher cirulating estrogen in the blood. 8) increase brassica / cruciferous vegetables in the diet - such as brocolli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, kale, kolrabi, cabbage. Here's a nice list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruciferous_vegetables Also onions and garlic are great. All these sulfur containing vegetables stimulate proper estrogen metabolism in the liver and therefore reduce circulating estrogen. There are a few types of estrogen in the body and they are not all the same - some are more biologically active than others and are considered harmful when you have too much circulating freely in the body. However, I do recommend that you have your thyroid checked. If you have a hypothyroid condition you will not want to eat more than 2-3 servings of brassica vegetables per week and they should be cooked. That is because brassica vegetables can affect the thyroid gland (they are goitrogenic) in people who are vulnerable to that. 9) you may also want to try a liver cleanse/detox - you can search this site and others for more information. But a basic one would be the diet above, plus cut out / reduce alcohol, take milk thistle and lecithin supplements. Again - the reason for this is that the liver is responsible for estrogen metabolism in the body, so you want it to be running in top condition. I hope that all helps! (sorry so long winded)
Guest guest
I also wanted to add to my previous post... try to have your female hormone levels checked. One good idea is a 28 day saliva test - then you will get a full picture of your hormone levels throughout the month. Then I would recommend seeing a homeopath or a good medical herbalist, who could then help you balance your hormones.
