Guest guest
I have plantar fasaciitis on the left foot and carpal tunnel in my right hand. The carpal has been going on for 2 years, getting much worse, and splints don't help anymore. A doc told me to get surgery. I don't believe in surgery - and really don't trust doctors anyway. I've searched the web for " alternative " cures, which is why I joined this group. There seem to be a few (non drug) things available for carpal tunnel. I've gotten some info on Wristrac and Carpal Therapist. Both seem promising. Does anybody use one of these? Any comment is appreciated because I have to do something soon. Thanks, Lee
Guest guest
Hello, Lee. Indeed, surgery is thrown around like candy. No doubt it's absolutely required in certain instances, but nowhere in the numbers that it's prescribed today. My personal philosophy is if you can do it without cutting, you're better off. I do have experience with most of the mainstream carpal therapies that DO NOT deal with surgery or steroid shots. I'll admit that my pain was so bad a few years ago that I did opt for the shots. They worked for a few weeks and then the pain returned, and returned worse. Only afterward did my doctor say, " Oh, that can happen " . So he treated me again, and that time the shot did almost nothing. Fast forward to using splints, braces, and tapes. They're not therapies as much as a way to keep your hand immobile to reduce movement and pain. The Wristtrac (then about $500) did nothing for me; zero. The company would not refund my money, so I wound up selling it on ebay for $90. On a friend's recommendation I bought the Carpal Therapist. That DID work, and was well worth the money. I keep it around just in case I get a flare-up, but the pain and burning are pretty much gone. I'd recommend that first. I'd also stay away from the tapes and pressure/thermal bladders. They're hype and expensive. Acupuncture and physical therapy work well too, but unless you can afford like $150 per week it's just not do-able. I sound like an expert, eh?! I've just dealt with it all and can only speak about what works for me. I hope I've helped a little. Guest guest
My uncle found that holding a bar of ivory soap in his hand helped. Below is what I have saved on carpel tunnel: ==== No impact until healed. And then light impact to start with. And, on the healing, I suggest the following two different methods. Massage the area with castor oil and AS YOU massage it have a heat lamp on it. Do for a minimum of 10 minutes. To keep the massaging hand from being burnt by the heat lamp, put a coat of castor oil on the back of it also. For a castor oil wrap, use wool, soak with castor oil, wrap around hand, put saran wrap over it to hold in the oil. Them put an 8 hour chem pack over it. Sleep with it on. Healing can be virtually miraculous. ===== Maureen, we had great results with Peppermint and Lavender. A matter of fact here is a funny story which shows you that many oils work: When first receiving my Essential 7 close to 4 years ago, I went to show them to my neighbor. I had no PDR or any book on what works, what not. But we played around for a while and I had her put oils on her wrists as she had been suffering for over 8 years from Carparal Tunnel Syndrom so bad that she had to quit work. There was no night that she did not wake in agony from pain in her wrists and arms. Well, we tried all the oils and had fun that morning. The very next morning before 7 AM, (we are farmers and are up early), she called to let me know that this had been her first night in 8 years that she did not have the pain that woke her. She ordered the the Lavender and Pan Away. When both ran out, she uses the Lavender for her problem since and has been problem free since. Then my minister told me that her daughter has carparal tunnel syndrome and I thought the neighbor had told me it was the peppermint she used, and suggested to the minister to have daughter use Peppermint. Which she did. Low and behold, the daughter had great relief by using Peppermint. And that is what she has been using for the last 2 years and has not had a problem since. Both ladies use the oils directly on the wrists maybe 2 or 3 times a week, now. I have since heard similar results from a number of other oils. I would look at the least expensive and go with it. If it works, that's it, If not, go to the next and so on, or maybe alternate. ==== Home Remedies for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome ======================================== Have you ever heard of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? If you feel some numbness around your hands or palms, consult your physician immediately as these symptoms might lead to serious damage to your life. Most bedridden patients experienced numbness around their feet or hands in the beginning, thinking that it was just a twist while sleeping or some simple daily usual occurrence. Often, they tell us that the feeling of numbness was just nothing, until time had passed for several years. One day they noticed that they failed to even hold a cup of coffee or else dropping it. Bear in mind that these are all dangerous signs to your health. In carpal tunnel syndrome, numbness usually occurs at thumb, index, middle finger and half of the ring finger. ## WHAT IS THE REAL CAUSE OF CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME? There are several and many think that it is caused by repetitive movements of arms and fingers especially among heavy computer keyboard users. Some records show that women during pregnancy and after delivery are more susceptible to carpal tunnel syndrome than others. It is also fairly common in patients undergoing dialysis. However, according to medical groups, up to this writing, there is no definite answer on the real cause of carpal tunnel syndrome. What could be the remedy for the thumb and other parts of the fingers that are getting thin or having muscle degeneration? It is quite difficult to answer, and there is also no definite remedy that was found. According to some patients, solving the pressure of the nerve with surgical operation will correct the condition or numbness. Of course, there are cases that such syndrome disappeared over time without any treatment. ## HOW TO TEST OR DIAGNOSE CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME? The following photo shows a diagnostic test for carpal tunnel syndrome, known as the Phalen's maneuver or Phalen's test. http://www.pyroenergen.com/articles08/images/phalens-maneuver.jpg Bend your wrist and maintain your hands position in a 90-degree angle, pushing the back of both hands together, for about one minute. If you do not feel any pain or numbness, then you are at least on the safe level. Of course, the Phalen's maneuver is not a definite way to diagnose but it helps to know at least. Two years ago, one of our caretakers in the rice field was cutting rice straw with sickle when she suddenly lost her power to hold the sickle and dropped it. Since then, she had difficulties holding things with her right hand for a year. She is now under diet control and of course, hands, arms and feet exercise everyday with the Pyro- Energen treatment. Usually, hands and mouth numbness leads to cerebral apoplexy or cerebral apoplexy leads to hands and mouth numbness. You should know that this numbness usually happens when you wake up in the morning. Whichever it is, if you feel slight numbness in your hands or around the mouth, we advise you to consult your physician immediately before anything serious happens to your health. Also, some patients told us that some numbness or strange feeling or strange vertigo occurs especially when they bend their neck (head) upward. Schoolteachers told us that such numbness occurred when they started writing on the blackboard when they bend their head upwards or when they face up. ## HOME REMEDIES FOR CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME Open and close and twist hard your hands as shown on these illustrations as often as possible every day. This simple hands exercise can eradicate hundreds of blood-related problems according to our experiences. http://www.pyroenergen.com/articles08/images/hand-exercise.jpg http://www.pyroenergen.com/articles08/images/hand-exercise2.jpg http://www.pyroenergen.com/articles08/images/hand-exercise3.jpg http://www.pyroenergen.com/articles08/images/hand-exercise4.jpg ------------------------- About the Author: Junji Takano is a Japanese health researcher involved in investigating the cause of various diseases since 1960. I used the Teetercreeek brand. Tracy ==== The best rubber bands are the kind the post office uses = nice and thick but not too big. Put it around your fingers and thumb, and then stretch your fingers and thumb out as far as you can. Another good exercise is to grip both hands intertwined together and then stretch them out as if you're pushing your palms away from your body. It this hurts too much, just cut back on the gradient and don't push out so hard. The idea is to start small and then increase the gradient comfortably. Doing simple push ups can also help as it stretches the area. Do the push ups from your knees or hips if you're out of shape. The place to start is with the rubber bands though. You can even increase this gradient by going up to two rubber bands or even three at a time. ML, Doc Melany wrote: Hi Doc Ian! For the Carpal tunnel symptoms I was getting, the keyboard change as you mention, with stretching exercises were pivotal in handling it. Nutrition absolutely. Down to 1 1/2 cup of coffee in the morning only. Also what helped me early on was professional manual therapy which stretched out that elastic band when it felt like it was going to snap. And now when I feel it threatening, the exercises alone do the trick...knock on wood! ==== I've helped at least three individuals in the last three years overcome Carpal Tunnel, one of which was my wife. She was running a daycare program at the time and could not even pick up a small glass of milk for one of the children without a lot of pain and most often, dropping the glass. I finally was onto it when I came in one day during the summer and the kitchen smelled of soured milk. She had dropped three different glasses that day and could not move the washing machine to clean under it. I made her go to the doctor (at the time, she was not a big believer in herbs), and the doctor told her to were a brace, take Motrin, and if it did not clear up in ten days, she would need surgery. Two weeks later, it had not gone away, and I told her I wasn't going to let them do surgery until she tried the herbs that I had ordered for her. Here's what we did in all three cases: 2 caps Yucca every 2 hours while awake for two days, then two caps every 4 hours (breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime) 2 caps licorice root every 3 hours for two days, then two caps every 4 hours as above. After the initial two days, the dosage was reduced. We continued with the two caps at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and bedtime for the remainder of three weeks, at which time for two of the three, the problems had gone away. The third took an additional week because they had suffered a few more months. Hope this helps. Wes PS--My wifes carpal tunnel occurred over two years ago. After the three weeks on the herbs, she has never had any other problems. That was her first experience with herbs and it converted her. I also take yucca for my back. I have two degenerating disk and I'm quite stiff in the mornings and early afternoons if I don't take it. It's a great alternative to Motrin and the other NSAID's. ********************* In Response Carpal tunnel (Jo) My wife had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and mentioned it to a friend who is a Physical Therapist. He Made her an appointment and made adjustments to the fascia in that area. Fascia is the tissue envelope that surrounds the muscles, bones. organs, brain and actually surrounds the whole body. When this tissue shrinks or thickens it applies pressure on the nerves in that area and causes pain. An adjustment regimen stretches the fascia and relieves the pressure. It took about six weeks, twice weekly to gain permanent relief. In the meantime in addition to the supplements suggested by others, I think that you should consider using NSP Phenyltol (3-4 per meal). Not all Physical Therapists are knowledgeable of this treatment. If your Therapist can't do this procedure, find one who can. This seems like a good alternative to surgery. ********************* B-6 is great to reduce the inflammation. Also you could add Joint-A and Glucosamine. Keeping your wrists in a Splint at night helps too as we all curl our hands while sleeping and this puts pressure on the nerve due to the thickened Ligaments. ==== VITAMIN C LINKED TO CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME People with a deficiency of vitamin B6 who take daily vitamin C supplements may be at increased risk for carpal tunnel syndrome. Some studies have suggested that vitamin B6 deficiency is an important contributor to carpal tunnel syndrome. Others have concluded that the vitamin is unrelated to symptoms consistent with carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by swelling in the wrist that puts pressure on the median nerve, which supplies feeling and motion to much of the hand. Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include numbness and tingling of the hand, and pain that wakes the person up at night. The prevalence of work-related repetitive strain injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome have risen sharply in recent years as a result of widespread use of computers and robotics in the workplace. The number of such reported injuries increases an average of 10% each year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The cost to industry may be as high as $21 billion when medical costs and indirect costs such as lost productivity, workers' compensation, replacement hiring, and legal fees are considered Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (1997;39:949-959) COMMENT: This study's findings suggest that vitamin B6 -- also known as Pyridoxine -- may be a useful treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. However, if one has carpal tunnel syndrome it would not be wise to take vitamin C unless one was also taking vitamin B6. VITAMIN C LINKED TO CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME ==== I have had good luck treating this with some of the B vitamins. One can look that up in a good book on them as it is common knowledge. B-6 and B-2 I think right now. But one can check on that. I know the B-6 is very important with it. It is an inflammatory problem so I would seriously consider some MSM with that also. ==== My wife had carpal tunnel so bad that she would cry with pain at night. She was a doll maker. Only TWO trips to a Good accupuncturist cured her completely. Guest guest
Hello, everybody; happy holidays and thank you for all the great advice. I've been using B complex for about 6 months, but I don't see an effect. I'll keep at it, though. I didn't know that raw organic apple cider vinegar might help, even though my best friend uses it for Crohn's disease. Happily, Santa brought me a carpal therapist (I decided that over the wristrac) and I started using it yesteday. I'll let you know how these things work. Some of this has to be mind over matter; just knowing there are a couple things I can do makes me feel better. Maybe that's it. eh? Perhaps the combination of pain and not being able to control it makes the pain worse? Hmmm.
