Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is an ever increasing worldwide problem

afflicting millions of people throughout the Western World. With the never

ending proliferation of toxic chemicals, into the work place, in our foods and

in our _personal care toiletries and cosmetics_

g.html) , is it any

wonder the newly discovered and modern " disease " Multiple Chemical

Sensitivity is becoming so common amongst the populations of developed nations.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity...

One man's story. Whilst still a young man, freshly out of school in New

Zealand, I began my working career in the late 1960's as an agricultural

contractor. Part of the work I did after leaving school was to spray **safe**

agricultural chemicals onto the land to control pasture weeds such as

ragwort and nodding thistle. A common chemical used for pasture spraying at the

time was 24-D

_http://www.health-report.co.uk/cancer-pesticides-245T-24D.html_

(http://www.health-report.co.uk/cancer-pesticides-245T-24D.html) , a

hormone spray which caused flat leaved plants to become deformed and

distorted before collapsing in on themselves and dying.

As my business spraying toxic chemicals onto the land grew, so did the

range of chemicals being produced by companies like ICI, Ciba Geigy, Monsanto,

Dow etc. Consequently we had an ever increasing multiple of chemicals to

control a variety of problem weeds occurring in the New Zealand countryside.

Chemicals that spring to mind are MCPA, MCPB, Picloram, Simazine,

Atrazine, Paraquat, Diquat 245-T and as mentioned above 24-D

It was not many years previous to me starting my spraying career, that

_245-T a powerful hormone based chemical_

(http://www.health-report.co.uk/cancer-pesticides-245T-24D.html) had been

developed by a chemist called Ivan

Watkins in New Zealand for the control of gorse and other woody weeds such

as blackberry and broom. 245-T was a highly effective chemical and was

used by spraying contractors at the time throughout the country. Literally

hundreds of thousands of gallons of this chemical was poured onto the land by

aerial spraying contractors and land based units like I owned. I personally

used around 500 gallons of the undiluted chemical per year in my spraying

operations. Often I used to get complaints about the sweet sickly smell of

245-T residues of the chemical on my clothes and body when I called into

the pub for a beer on the way home from the days work.

During the manufacturing of 245-T and 24-D a powerful and toxic by-product

was produced known as dioxin

_http://www.health-report.co.uk/cancer-pesticides-245T-24D.html_

(http://www.health-report.co.uk/cancer-pesticides-245T-24D.html) . Dioxin

is one of the most poisonous and toxic substances in the world and has a

terrible track record for causing birth deformities and cancers in animals

and in humans exposed to this toxin. (1-4 Dioxane, a related toxic chemical,

is also found in many shampoos and personal care products by the way!) The

side effects of using 245-T were very well known by the chemical companies

of the time but were glossed over as they quoted the LD50* rating of the

chemical which was round 600 PPM. (*Acute dose whereby 50 percent of test

animals died. The blood levels for the chemical were then measured and

expressed as parts per million PPM.)

They insisted that 245-T was completely safe due to the fact that test

animals died only after more than 700 PPM was measured in the blood. Compared

to chemicals like Paraquat with an LD50 rating of around 100 then it did

appear by their standards the chemical was safe. Of course typical of

chemical manufacturers then and now, no long term testing had ever been carried

out for chronic effects of these dangerous chemicals. It seems criminal that

all those years ago when vested interests knew the devastating effects of

exposure to dioxin and dioxane compounds that today, the average person is

still exposed to these powerful toxins in personal care products.

Although we were constantly reassured by the manufacturers of 245-T (Ivan

Watkins the original developer and manufacturer had merged with the huge US

Dow chemical company and was now called Watkins Dow) that 245-T was

completely safe to humans and animals alike, many of us in the industry at the

time, were starting to have nagging doubts about the residues of dioxin that

remained in the product. These doubts have long since disappeared and it is

with absolute certainty that I and others like me believe that 245-T and

24-D in combination with other chemicals have been largely or in part

responsible for a multitude of ongoing chronic health problems. Problems which

are now affecting so many of the people who have used these dangerous and

toxic chemicals. Not only the users of multiple chemicals like I used, but

also people who have been unwittingly exposed via spray drift and contaminated

crops and foods and products containing dioxins

The term Multiple Chemical Sensitivity was unheard of then.

It wasn't until the the US became involved in the Vietnam war that the

dreadful truth about these toxic and poisonous chemicals started to emerge. To

facilitate their war effort the US government war machine in their

infinite wisdom, decided to use a lethal cocktail of 245-T, 24-D, picloram and

other chemicals plus the by-product of 245-T and 24-D manufacturing, dioxin,

to defoliate the jungles. You may have heard of the infamous ** _Agent

Orange_

where military aircraft sprayed vast tracts of the Vietnam jungles

to expose **the enemy** below.

It has never left my memory seeing great twin engine planes adapted to

spray millions of gallons of toxic tan covered mist over the jungles of

Vietnam, poisoning all that lay below.

No thought was given by the powers that be at the time, to the incredible

human suffering they would inflict on the unsuspecting civilians and their

own personnel. This was mass Multiple Chemical Sensitizing on a scale never

seen in the world before. Of course all the propaganda at the time never

mentioned any of the terrible ongoing toxic effects this lethal cocktail of

poisonous chemicals would have on people. The birth deformities, the deaths

and the setting up of chronic health problems for tens of thousands of

people, including their own military personnel is one of the great travesties

in our modern world.

Just like the Gulf War veterans who have been fighting a battle with

government departments since the Gulf War ended, the Vietnam Vets never had any

recognition of their problems. Almost all of them exposed to Agent Orange

have suffered with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity to greater or lesser

degrees. Governments of course can never admit that their actions by

sanctioning

the use of these chemicals, caused the problems. The floodgates to

litigation would open and the whole truth would be known.

Vested interests, the chemical companies, also stand to to lose huge sums

if liability was ever proved.

In this **new age of chemical enlightenment** I and many others like me,

farmers and agricultural contractors actually believed what the companies

were telling us about these **safe** chemicals.

In 1972 I bought a mobile sheep dipping unit and hired myself complete

with dogs and machinery to farmers and the New Zealand Government run Lands

and Survey farms to spray or dip their flocks of sheep with an organo

phosphate chemical. This was ostensibly for the control of lice and also for

the

control of flies which tended to lay eggs on damp sheep's wool and cause

terrible suffering to the animals. Again we were assured that using these

toxic chemicals and in particular the organo phosphate diazanon was safe,

provided reasonable precautions were taken. It was touted as being far safer

than the chemical it replaced DDT which had received much bad publicity in

Rachael Carson*s book **Silent Spring**.

Not once do I recall ever been told by any chemical company rep or on any

of the Government sponsored courses I attended to be **qualified** to

spray these chemicals, that organo phosphate had originally been developed as a

powerful neurotoxin by the Nazis during the war as a chemical warfare

weapon. Yet here we were, me and literally thousands of other unsuspecting

farmers and contractors using a deadly chemical designed to wreck the nervous

system of the victim.

Organo phosphate chemicals certainly did a great job on killing flies and

lice!

When I look back, this period in my life it was the start of my own

personal battle with an ongoing period of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity it has

taken a lifetime to overcome and live with. Today I am largely recovered

thanks to huge amounts of research and putting into practice some fairly tough

and rigid regimes to rid my body of the toxic build up. If you would like

to read more on the methods I have used to recover my good health then read

my comprehensive E-Book

_http://www.health-report.co.uk/form_quest_health.html_

(http://www.health-report.co.uk/form_quest_health.html) or read any

of the reports I have listed in the side bar to the right.

Unfortunately many of my colleagues in the spraying industry of the time

have now succumbed to degenerative disease, particularly cancer after

spending a large portion of the latter part of their lives suffering chronic

ill

health. The sad part about the lessons we should have learned from all this

is the need to reduce chemicals in our diet and products we use on a daily

basis. Yet the exact opposite has been the case. There has been an amazing

proliferation of toxic chemicals into the workplace, into our diets and

into the personal care toiletries we apply to our skin.

Vested interests seem hell bent on producing ever more chemicals to

replace natural products as fast as possible. When you think about this the

reason is obvious. The more they sell the more money they make. Yet I ask are

they really necessary. Of course the answer is a resounding NO. Chemicals are

used to... replace natural flavours... to preserve foods and make them

last... to make products more usable... to colour them... to artificially

sweeten them... to make the extraction of oil easier and more economical... to

hoodwink children*s taste buds into thinking a colourful bright and sweet

food is good for them.

The list of uses for chemicals is endless and quite frightening and it is

no wonder that Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is now so common!

Our parents and grand parents never needed all these toxic chemicals in

their diet to eat wholesome good food. Yet apparently we do! Our children

suffer with ADD/ADHD, Eczema and Asthma and most parents today seem to accept

this as normal. Why? Is it because we are so brainwashed by propaganda like

I was when I was a young man. We are still being manipulated by the giant

chemical and drug companies to buy ever more of their drugs and chemicals.

Individually we can do little about what is happening. However

collectively we can wield enormous power as has been shown with the resistance

to GM

modified food emanating from the States. The GM industry is reversing now

thanks to consumer resistance to buying any GM modified product. Money talks

and when an industry has lost the billions of dollars like the North

American GM maize industry has lost since the introduction of GM crops, the

trend

is very encouraging.

nearly every " body " in the UK today

Dimethylphosphate (DMP)

The contaminant Dimethylphosphate (DMP) is an Organophosphate Pesticide

Metabolite.

Dimethylphosphate (DMP) was found in 6 of our nine test subjects. Davis

Baltz had 9.0 micrograms per liter of urine (ug/L). The 6 people had an

average of 16.0 ug/L and a range of 9.0 to 28.0. _Environmental Working Group

The organophosphate (OP) pesticides cause significant neurotoxicity in

laboratory animals and humans, which is not surprising since they were

designed to attack the nervous system of insects. Although these pesticides are

not as persistent as some environmental chemicals, they are generally more

toxic to the young compared to adults. This means that even short-term

exposures, such as during pregnancy or childhood, can result in toxicity.

In laboratory animals and humans, the primary target of the OP pesticides

is the nervous system. Specific effects in laboratory animals include

altered brain weight, cellular changes in the brain, altered neurotransmitter

activity, and abnormal behavior. High doses can cause tremors, convulsions,

and death. Many OPs also cause developmental toxicity, such as low birth

weight and skeletal abnormalities.

Much of what is known about the effects of OP exposure in humans is based

on accidental overexposure (home spray, ingestion) and worker studies. From

these studies we know that typical signs of OP poisoning are: nausea;

diarrhea; muscle twitching; blurred vision; headache; respiratory distress;

lightheadedness; memory impairment; numbness (especially in the extremities);

altered nerve conduction; abnormal heart rate and coma or death at high

doses.

Dimethylphosphate (DMP) is a breakdown product of azinphos-methyl,

chlorpyrifos methyl, dichlorvos, dimethoate, fenitrothion, fenthion, isazophos

methyl, malathion, methidathion, naled, oxydemeton-methyl, phosmet,

pirimiphos-methyl, temephos, tetrachlorvinphos, trichlorfon.
