In September 2003 I shifted from a largely grain and bean based diet to a more hunter-gatherer type diet, and I lost 10 pounds the first month, ultimately losing 30 pounds in 5 months. For the first few years, I was still eating oatmeal on weight training days and two slices of sprouted grain bread with cheese or hummus for my evening meal. A couple years ago, I ditched the wheat, cheese, and oatmeal. However, I'm not purist to the point that my diet is a " cult of food re-enactment " as Kurt Harris puts it on his PaNu blog. Once in a while I'll have some wild rice or dried beans, and I do enjoy fresh beans from the farmers market in summer time. In a nutshell, what you should absolutely completely eliminate from the diet are refined sugars, grains containing gluten (wheat, barley, rye, etc.), and refined vegetable oil. Everything else you can experiment with to see how well you do with or without. As a general rule, if you're going to eat cooked starches, limit it to a half-cup of cooked starchy food in a meal, with the bulk of the meal being paleo spectrum foods. As a diabetic, though, you really should just cut out the cooked starches altogether. And, by cooked starches, I mean grains, pseudo grains (quinoa, amaranth, etc.), potatoes, sweetpotatoes, and any other food that is mostly just starch. Additionally, as a diabetic, it might also be good to eliminate dairy products. The blogosphere is a great resource for paleo diet info. I'd post some links, but the moderator always edits them out when I do. My favorite two paleo blogs are " PaNu " and " Mark's Daily Apple " ; just plug the quoted names into a search engine and you'll find them.
