Guest guest
Hi, I'm new to the group and enjoying the posts immensely ) I hope someone can help me with a problem. I need advice about treating a suspected case of strep throat in my 16 yr old son. As it's a holiday weekend, the soonest I can get him to our dr for a culture will be Tuesday. Until then, I feel we should err on the side of caution and treat his red, white, and PAINFUL throat as a bacterial infection. It has the earmarks of strep: sudden onset, fever, severe pain, headache....What I've done for him so far since yesterday: I made him take echinacea/goldenseal capsules and drink lemon-honey tea; he's dissolved zinc lozenges under his tongue; I'm in the process of making up a tincture made from fresh, raw gingerroot for him to gargle; and he's in a hot bath inhaling steam infused with rosemary, lavender, eucalyptus radiata, and baby peppermint. I understand that garlic could be helpful but he flat-out refuses to have anything to do with it. He really doesn't like garlic! I'll appreciate any suggestions that come our way. Thanks, jaime
Guest guest
On the garlic...there are good capsules that have no taste but all the benefits. I think that Garlique brand is one of them. You could also try gently sauteing (sp) in oil until golden brown this give the garlic a nutty flavor. We also take off the top of the whole head and drizzle it with olive oil and bake in the oven for about an hour at 350 degrees and then squeeze it on toast and boy is it yummy. Guest guest
Hi Jaime, Welcome aboard! I've personally had success using oregano oil to combat strep. I've sniffed it and taken a few drops internally, either a few drops on a spoonful of sugar or a drop or two in my food (or as my hubby likes to take it a few drops in a capsule, but I find the food or sugar way is most effective for me). Also, I got the below message from Butch, who is somewhere in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico and is having a hard time trying to post to the list, but was able to get the message. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Hey Chris, OREGANO (Origanum vulgare) or any of the Carvacrol rich Origanums will kick it in the butt post haste. If I were at my PC now I could provide many well conducted scientific studies to support this .. since I'm not at my PC I can provide a personal testimonial and state that I have MANY testimonials from others. All you gotta do is sniff it .. though putting a drop or two in a nice soup and rolling it around in the mouth afore swallowing will help too. Guest guest
Jaime, I'm sorry to hear your son is ill. I read somewhere that apple cider vinegar will kill strep. I honestly can't remember WHERE I read it.....but I digress.... Anyway, I just did a search about it, and found several other citations of the same thing that I read about apple cider vinegar. Take 1 tablespoon of the vinegar, swish and gargle, and then spit this out. Take another tablespoon of the apple cider vinegar, swish, gargle, and then swallow. It's been shown to kill the strep virus within 24 hours...... If you'd like to read more, go to google.com and do a search on apple cider vinegar and strep throat. Also, adding a bit of apple cider vinegar in some hot tea with a bit of honey, will help soothe the throat, and also take away the 'bite' the vinegar has. I know that I have been giving this to my girls ever since I read about it....they were always getting strep and tonsilitis...... Ever since then....they may still get a mild case of tonsilitis, but they have NEVER had strep again. HTH, Candy in AL
Guest guest
Thank you to all the people who responded with suggestions and sympathy for our problem. We're incorporating as many of them as we have resources for. Unfortunately, the only places in my area where I can get oregano oil are closed on Sundays and Mondays, but we do have cidar vinegar. My son has rarely been sick in his life, so now that he has an infection you'd think he'd heard the knell of doom. He's miserable in mind, body, and spirit, poor thing. But I have to tell you, he thinks my ministrations are worse than the disease itself. Just now, after his appointment with THE VINEGAR, he summoned the strength to drive himself to his girlfriend's house, " before you try to cure me of anything else! " (So, despite his protestations otherwise, I feel he will, indeed, mend). ;O) jaime
Guest guest
May I intervene with one comment here, I am here to learn about oil and herbs along with everyone. I just got over rheumatic fever due to not knowing I had strep. Be very careful. Rev. Guest guest
Michelle and Nora, thank you both for responding. I will keep propolis in mind for the rest of the family but I won't be able to use it with my 16 yr old. He's allergic to bee stings and we've been advised to avoid all bee products with him, although he can have honey occasionally, in small amounts. And Nora, I'm so sorry you had to deal with rheumatic fever. It's not something to mess around with, which is why I'm anxious to get my boy's throat cultured. He has an appt for this afternoon (the soonest I could get him seen anywhere). Thanks again, jaime
