Guest guest
Chris, I had something VERY similar happen the last time I made liquid soap. I kept thinking it had something to do with the temp of the lye/water and oils since I also used the formula I always use. The soap actually was among the BEST I have made as far as remaining nice and thick. Think temps could cause it? -Helen
Guest guest
Ya know Helen, It might be! I didn't heat the olive oils at all, and the lye water might have been somewhat warmer than it usually is when I combine it with the oil. I never use thermometers, just go by " feel " (no, I don't feel the lye water, but I feel the outside of the container that it is in) and it was getting late, so I was a bit hastier than usual getting " the show on the road " as the saying goes. I'll have to try to do that again next time and see what happens. Maybe we've found a new method! Lets both take notes next time, and if it happens again we'll co-author the book! *lol* *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Helen [worth249] Chris, I had something VERY similar happen the last time I made liquid soap. Guest guest
This " accident " reminds me very much of the method that Susan Miller talks about in her Complete Soapmaking book. She basically has you add the KOH to your heated oils (160 F) and stir a bit...then leave it for 24 hours and voila, you have paste...so, sans the heated oils (which is superfluous because you started out with liquid anyways, Chris), it sounds pretty close, unless I am missing something in your process. I think that you were right in your earlier post, that the KOH will do its work, no matter what, and your soap, and Susan's process is proof of that truth. Guest guest
I will make notes the next time and try to duplicate what I did last time. I am reasonably certain it had something to do with temps as I was hurrying with that batch. I never use a thermoeter either and go by feel. It will be interesting to try this again. -Helen Ya know Helen, It might be!
