Hi Peggy,

> <snipped> I wonder how it is determined that certain oils clog

pores....just experience?

There is actually a lot of science behind it.

Ingredients that clog pores are called comedogenic and those that do not

clog pores are called non comedogenic.

Here is a pretty good compilation of ingredients and their level of

Comedogenicity

When it comes to saponified oils - like tallow ... since the oils are

chemically changed from being lipids into sodium compounds (or potassium

depending on the type of lye used), it alters their action and structure

.... so rather than being an oil which coats the skin, it turns into a

salt compound that strips oils from the skin (and washes it) ...

Chris, you mentioned there was a lot of science behind this... I'm

looking for info on that science now. So far I've only found this:

http://www.eco-labels.org/label.cfm?LabelID=258 & mode=text and it's

not pretty. :(

This is irritating because I just looked at my acne lotion, it has at

least 2 level-two comedogenics in it, and my moisturizer has 2

level-FOUR(!) and 3 level-two comedogenics in it, and it's marked

" non-comedogenic " . Grrrrr.

I wonder how comedogenic or not various essential oils are. I've seen

rosemary, lavender, tea tree, etc in skincare products.
