Guest guest
Actually the Defense Of Marriage Act is still alive and well as, it was the proposed Constitutional Amendment that was defeated today - which it was conceded a few days ago in advance, by those pushing it, that it would probably lose. Folks are talking about issues that they feel they need to talk about, which is good, but in the end hopefully radical judges will not legislate from the bench trying to taking power away from law makers and the wishes of their constituents and hopefully federal law makers won't feel the need to try to take power away from the states because of the legislating judges ... .... and the circle goes round and round and round till ya wanna barf ;-p Now, that being said, don't anyone go and turn this into a political broo ha ha! I forbid it and I am the benevolent dictator here! Take it off list if y'all wanna go off in whatever direction on this one - cause I KNOW there are passionate views on both sides here, with neither one necessarily being correct or incorrect! *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com seraphimstouch [seraphimstouch] Hi All, Don't know if anyone is interested in this but the Defense of Marriage act was just Defeated by a 50-48 vote in the senate woohoo. The constitution is safe from being altered from an article of inclusion to an article of exclusion! Guest guest
YAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!! It never struck me as fair that the couples I know who have celebrated 20+ years together had absolutely no chance of being able to legalize their union, while two drunken doofuses who show no commitment whatsoever could just walk into a chapel in Vegas and get government sanction of an impulse. Guest guest
Hey Chris, Do you intend this to mean that we shouldn't talk about FMA, etc, on the list at all... or that it just shouldn't bubble over? -Josh
Guest guest
Hi Ann, It was a bill passed by Congress and signed into law by then President Clinton in 1997 that basically does two things. " First, it provides that no State shall be required to give effect to a law of any other State with respect to a same-sex " marriage. " Second, it defines the words " marriage " and " spouse " for purposes of Federal law. " Details can be seen here: http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~leg450/doma.htm http://www.lectlaw.comleg23.htm *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Ann Thorpe [Ann] Hi Chris - the benevolent dictator! Guest guest
There is a lot of talk about various kinds of ways for " alternative lifestyle " couples to be able to legalize their unions. Let us hope that it gets all sorted out in ways that will make everyone happy (although that rarely happens cause the world is full of pig headed people on all sides of the octagon And yes, drunken s having impulsive drive through weddings in Vegas is definitely in its own right something that " makes a mockery of and defiles the sanctity of marriage " Now, you're forgiven Serra ... but I will lash with a wet noodle anyone who tries to make this an on list battle cause NOTHING will get solved on this topic on this list, even if we talked about it till we were blue in the face (or typed about it 'till our fingers fell off). *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Serra [serraangel] YAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!! Guest guest
Hi Josh, I'm a pretty flexible list mom, and I let a lot of off topic and even political discussion take place on here - cause I like to hear what folks think, and I believe we are multidimensional folks, and need to express our personalities to our community of friends .. and that personalities include more than just what essential oil we like to sniff and put into soap. But I also know that in an election year, the closer we get to the elections, the more " passionate " everyone gets about their issues and expressing their views, and I don't wanna see the tone of the list get nasty due to that fact and are excited about various political topics. *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Joshua Alexander [josh] Hey Chris, Do you intend this to mean that we shouldn't talk about FMA, etc, on the list at all... or that it just shouldn't bubble over? -Josh
