Guest guest
In my search for all things fragrant in Korea, I finally ran across a store that not only sold incense - but sold ONLY tea and incense. They had aloeswood chips, and aloeswood malas, along with all kinds of medicinal teas. The incense is supposed to be medicinal too. It appears to me that Korean incense is very much along the lines of high quality Japanese incense like Baieido, but it's definately different fragrance-wise. Here's some information on one brand they gave me: Da Bo Incense Sticks " Ingredients: Pine (Pinus Koraiensis), Tumeric (Carcuma longa), Cinnamon (Cinnamon), and other spices. Contents: Approx 35 long burning incense sticks per package (each burns approx. 40 minutes - twice as long as other brands). No synthetic oils, fragrances, or animal products. Net Wt. 0.42 oz. (15 g.) Stimulating and refreshing, this blend of spices purifies the air and clears the mind. " Chung Shim (Bright Heart) Incense Sticks " Ingredients: Pine (Pinus densiflora), Elecampane (Enula campana), Red Sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus), and other spices. Contents: Approx 30 long burning incense sticks per package (each burns approx. 70 minutes - twice as long as other brands). No synthetic oils, fragrances, or animal products. Net Wt. 0.85 oz. (30 g.) A clearing and stimulating blend of spices. " Chui Woon Incense Sticks " Ingredients: Figwort (Scrophularia buergeriana), Elecampane (Enula campana), Clove (Syzyglum aromatium), and other spices. Contents: Approx 35 long burning incense sticks per package (each burns approx. 40 minutes - twice as long as other brands). No synthetic oils, fragrances, or animal products. Net Wt. 0.42 oz. (15 g.) Soothing and purifying, this blend of spices relaxes and induces a sense of well being. " Jing Kwan Incense Sticks " Ingredients: Frankincense (Olibanum), Aloeswood (Aquilaria agailocha), Sandalwood (Santalum), and other spices. Contents: Approx 35 long burning incense sticks per package (each burns approx. 40 minutes - twice as long as other brands). No synthetic oils, fragrances, or animal products. Net Wt. 0.42 oz. (15 g.) Calming and centering, this blend of spices balances Yin and Yang and improves energy (Ki) flow. " There was another brand we bought, where we got a mixture of sticks in a nice wooden tube. It was even more Oriental medicine oriented. Heh. We also got to sample some delicious hydrangea tea. All in all, it was a neat experience in a very nice day. The more I see of Korea, the more I love it. FYI, here are some examples of Korean celedon-ware incense burners. I bit overpriced, but still very pretty. We have the lotus and rabbit one (but i only paid 13$ for it) but we mostly use a little kim-chee pot with rice ash in it. http://www.korean-arts.com/incense_burners/celadon_incense_burners.htm JenB - still hunting down Asia's fragrant offerings.
