Guest guest
There's another mail list hosted by called " Alice's Restaurant " that is about all things incense--making, using, ceremony, medicinal uses, history of, Lafcadio Hern and his time in Japan... ANYTHING you could ever want to know about incense, especially Japanese. It's a bit technical at times (those folks are SERIOUS about incense), but otherwise very interesting. Guest guest
Hi Jen, I do! I do! :-D Pretty much I make my powdered incense like usual, then add some makko (tabu) to it, moisten it with a tiny little bit of water, to make it workable and then shape it. Its a little tedious, and I am still looking for something that'll make a good cone mold, so I don't have to sit there and futz around so long with each individual cone *lol* .... What exactly did ya need to know. I'll be glad to help out! I bet its easier to find makko over there than it is here, huh? *Smile* Chris http://www.alittleolfactory.com nsorcel [jen] Does anyone know how to make incense cones, or kneaded incense using makko? Guest guest
Hi Christina, Does David have the Alice list back up and running? Also, there is a list called " Incense: The Scent of Enlightenment " run by Daijo .. *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Christina [tcmresources] There's another mail list hosted by called " Alice's Restaurant " that is about all things incense--making, using, ceremony, medicinal uses, history of, Lafcadio Hern and his time in Japan... Guest guest
Chris, I have no idea what makko is. But have wanted to figure out how to make cones from dry herbs for some time.. I do have this great herb mix that is also used for Kinnickenick and burned in a dish, but I have some German 'smoky guys' * that I use at Christmas and they need cones, all commercial cones I have tried so far, are not working for me, Asthma..big time. I would really be thrilled to get some advice. C-M * Smoky guys are handcarved figurines that usually have a pipe in their mouth. The bottom comes off to hold a cone. When you light the cone, the pipe smokes.

Doesn't surprise me. Many, if not most, of the cones commercially available are made with cheap ingredients, like pressed sawdust and synthetic oils. > I would really be thrilled to get some advice. > C-M Well, with makko powder (tabu) a little bit goes a long way! Today is my day to play around a make up some " stuff " after I get all the running around chores done, like going to the post and all that (which I am off to do now), so give me some time to pull out my notes and play around so I can get some exact measurements for you, instead of " a sprinkle of this " and " a pinch of that " instructions *lol* I am sure I can send ya a " pinch " of makko to try out, cause its not the easiest of ingredients to find, and you don't need to go and buy a pound of it online either *lol* If you did that you'd be passing it down for generations and so would they <grinz> > * Smoky guys are handcarved figurines that usually have a pipe in their > mouth. Guest guest
It's been up and running for months to my knowledge, they had a recent thread on the making of incense that was quite interesting. I cannot even remember how I found out about the group, but it's great fun to lurk on ;-) CES, LAc --- Christine Ziegler <chrisziggy wrote: > Hi Christina, > > Does David have the Alice list back up and running? > > Also, there is a list called " Incense: > The Scent of > Enlightenment " run by Daijo .. > > *Smile* > Chris (list mom) > > http://www.alittleolfactory.com > > > > > Christina [tcmresources] > > > There's another mail list hosted by > called > " Alice's Restaurant " that is about all things > incense--making, using, ceremony, medicinal uses, > history of, Lafcadio Hern and his time in Japan... > ANYTHING you could ever want to know about incense, > especially Japanese. Guest guest
I used to be on it some time ago, and David pretty much threw a hissy fit and .. umm ... took it away .. *lol* I'm glad to see it back up and running, I'll have to go sub up again. It is a great place to learn all about making Japanese incense, as well as makko, and all that. Along with Daijo's list, LOTS of great incense making stuff (of course I never mind talking about making incense here! Ups, more rumblings of thunder here (got over a foot of rain this month! Its like living in a rainforest here)! Gonna go now and get back to my chores. Time to make " stuff " and get back to y'all on making the incense in a bit! :-D *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Christina [tcmresources] It's been up and running for months to my knowledge, they had a recent thread on the making of incense that was quite interesting. It might be, but just like everything else, you'd have to know where to start - or start asking people. I can't look in the phone book yet, thought I might be able to get a friend to search it for me. Though I'm not sure incense would be listed - or at least good incense. My Korean is getting better every day ( I study for two hours a day, then go out and attempt to talk to people) but it's not good enough yet to search out incense. I'll try to poke around at the temple and see what they use. That's probably my best bet I was more or less wondering if you just wet the makko mix, or if you had to use a binder - some form of gum. David Oller's site had great info - was just wondering if there was anything else I should know. I like the idea of using hydrosols for the water part. Thanks Chris! Guest guest
Hi Jen, The makko is a binder And yes, you just wet it a bit until it is pliable enough to work with without it falling apart on ya. *Smile* Chris (list mom - So very far behind in my e-mail *sigh*) http://www.alittleolfactory.com nsorcel [jen] <snipped> I was more or less wondering if you just wet the makko mix, or if you had to use a binder - some form of gum. ...
