So in fact rose absolute may smell more " rosey " than rose otto? So I'm

curious (and appologise for my naivete) ... why is rose otto in such high

demand?

Thanks, Butch ... you are educating me!

I'll comment on his last sentence .. in fact, the odor of an Absolute

will more closely resemble the aromatic source it was extracted from

than will an Essential Oil.

Well, I am not Butch, but I can also answer this question about Rose

absolutes and otto.

Absolutes are extracted with solvents and for that reason primarily are

not used (for the most part) in aromatherapy. Some aromatherapists

object to them entirely, but most you will find will make a couple of

exceptions. They may be used in a blend that is more for scent than

" physical " healing. There is also a parallel profession that some of us

here are involved with and that is Natural Perfumery. Most of us who

make natural perfumes use a very wide variety of botantical materials-

essential oils, CO2 extracts, absolutes, concretes, waxes, tinctures,

infusions, etc. We are blending natural materials for the sake of

beauty, artistry, and scent.

Some purists will not use absolutes even in perfumery. If you look at

Chrissie Wildwood's Aromatherapy Perfumes book she focuses her blends

on essential oils. They are a variety of reasons some people may object

to the use of absolutes from environmental (the use of hexane and other

solvents) to scent (the quality varies and some smell a lot like

solvents) to application (many who are making blends for the body for

therapeutic use will not use absolutes). In general they are not widely

used in aromatherapy for " therapeutic " use. Most of us use Rose otto

for aromatherapy and Rose absolute for perfumery- or in toiletries like

soapmaking. In perfumery we use both.

I normally have and use a wide variety of floral absolutes from

different types of Roses, different areas, etc. The scents vary widely.

I use Rose a lot in my perfumes and my aromatherapy products. There is

a type of Rose absolute that I like very, very much (Rose bourbonia/

Rose Edward) that I am favoring at the moment for its depth and

sweetness, but truthfully I have many that I love and use often.

Another point. Many absolutes are " waxy " and break down easier in

alcohol than they do in oil bases- another reason that perfumers use

them quite a bit more as we are often using alcohol bases. The primary

reason we use them is scent and because they are many, many flowers

that can not hold up to steam distillation. There are some new CO2

extractions now becoming available of some of the flowers that were

normally only extracted with hexane or steam distillation- and that is

also a nice addition for something very " clean " that smells very much

like the plant material itself.

Try some different Rose absolutes and ottos. You'll see how they vary.

Be warned that with an absolute you will normally need to dilute it

before you are able to appreciate the aroma fully. Even though the

prices are high (although sometimes Rose absolute is less than Rose

otto) you'll see how very strong and concentrated absolutes are.

Because of them in perfumery I can work with the most beautiful and

delicate Mimosa, Jasmine, Frangipani, Jonquil, Linden Blossom,

Carnation, Boronia, Rose, Violet Leaf, Tuberose, Lotus, etc.

More demand in aromatherapy- vs perfumery.

Less was produced than there is/was a demand for it by the industry.

The demand is great so it drives the orice up and the supply down. Much

less was produced last year than was promised and many people were

unable to get it at all or at a price that was affordable to them and

their customers. Looks like the same scenario projected this year. ;-(

There is really nothing quite like a very good organic Rose otto. I can

not talk about it without salivating, lol! And it is scarce. Nothing

makes an aromatherapist happier than a nice big supply of Rose otto in

stock. Organic Turkish Rose otto is generally my preference for Rose

otto (steam distilled essential oil of Rose) ;-)

(Wahhhhhhhh.......saddened by the forcast).

Taking care of each of my precious drops of otto.

Grateful for my stash of gorgeous absolute.
