Guest guest
coming out of lurkdom to seek info from the knowledgeable folks here. Our nearly 3 year old grandson is constantly putting his hands in his mouth. Is there something we could put on his hands that just wouldn't taste good that would help break this habit? Thanks in advance for any advice. JanG

Guest guest
I have 5 kids and 14 grands ranging in age from 11.5 years to 11 months. Haven't seen a kid yet that would keep their fingers out of their mouth. Don't worry about it, wash their hands alot, and they'll out grow it in time. Guest guest
Hi Jan, I broke one of my kids from sucking his thumb by putting mustard on it, but he has not forgiven me to this day and he is going to be 36... C-M
Guest guest
Sometimes there is a reason for putting hands in mouth. I'm sure you have passed the teething mark but what if there is a new tooth or maybe he misses his binky. If this is something new he is doing or an ongoing thing. I wouldn't put anything on his hands that would taste bad as he probably also rubs his eyes and you wouldn't want to cause an irritation there. Guest guest
I know I’m replying to this a bit late, but they do grow out of it. My dd used to eat dirt and rocks. When she went in for her yearly check her doctor asked how she was doing I told him about the eating of dirt and rocks. He asked, is it clean dirt (meaning no animals) and I said yes. He just said, bring her back in when she gets through with her dirt eating phase and we’ll give her a dewormer!! LOL!! We still have Aunts and Uncles asking if she still eats rocks!! She’s 6 ½ now! Knock wood, she’s only gone to the doctor once a year and that was for her yearly check up!! Last time, he said, see her when she’s 10!
