adulterated oils?

Hey Guys,

I am reaching out and for the first time ordering from different companies...

I have, however, been disappointed with some of the oils I have gotten .

(Haven't ordered from Butch yet...he is next payday! *grin*)

So, here is my question...

How do I TELL if an oil is adulterated...other than the fact that it

SMELLS...off?

Example...I ordered some Lime oil...

It smells VERY chemical-ly...like Lime away chemical-ly.

(Literally!)

The orange oil also smells off...like Orange Glo...not natural at all...

When I diffused these oils, they clogged my diffuser within hours!

and when I cleaned the diffuser, I ended up with a WHITE, oily residue inside

the glass...it looked and smelled like Vaseline.

Do I just assume that these are adulterated?

I THOUGHT I was ordering from a reputable source...

Any thoughts...other than stick to Butch? *grin*

I read in one of my books to put a drop on a piece of paper and if you get an

oily spot it has been adulterated. Most eo's should evaporate without that

spot. The advice also said they would evaporate quickly but I found it took

some time for that to happen. Anyone else have some ideas? Kathy

in total honesty, if the adulteration is well done, as the end consumer,

you usually can't.

cold pressed citrus oils can contain too much of the citrus wax, this may

clog the diffuser, and may leave a 'waxy' or 'oily' coating on the inside

of the diffuser.

it's not necessarily a sign of adulteration, but it isn't a sign that you

want to use more of the oil, either.

with both the lime and the orange smelling " chemically " I'm

wondering 1. did you have steam distilled or cold pressed oils (there is

a difference, aromatically..but neither should smell like chemicals or

2. how old the oils were... the citruses, if not stored properly, could

have gone thru a lot of oxidation...and that's going to be reflected in the

smell.

there are a lot of reputable online vendors...Butch is one of several.

the BEST thing you can do before chosing a supplier is request samples from

several, and compare the " same " oils... see whose you like best.

please note the quote marks around 'same'... because sometimes they will

be, and sometimes they won't... there are differences... and that is what

you want to experience.

Hi Jessica,

I'm sure someone else can confirm this, but I've always read that

unadulterated eo's will not leave a stain. Try putting a a drop on

paper... if the oil has been cut, it will definitely leave a stain.
