This isn't AT and your friend probably is already doing this, but

elevate it as much as she can. If it hurt but doesn't hurt anymore,

sounds like she damaged it somehow (sprain or soft tissue damage) Still

elevation is the best. Even if she has to put it up on a chair under

the table at work. Maybe gentle exercise would help too; rotating foot

at ankle, pointing-flexing, that sort of thing. Maybe a good foot soak

each night in warm water with Epsom salts. Maybe some brushing. Just

throwing out ideas.

Hello everyone,

Does anyone have any advice for self treatment regarding a severely

swollen ankle.

I have a friend who's ankle on her left foot is very severely swollen.

The ankle on her right foot is a little swollen but nothing in

comparison to her left foot.

I have asked her if she remembers doing anything to it and she says she

does not. For quite a while it was painful for her to walk on but she

says now it is not. I asked her about any sensations that she may be

experiencing like itching or tingling. She says there is nothing. She

says that now it hurts when you push down on it with your hand and it is

so swollen that it is difficult to get shoes on. Having put shoes on,

it is painful to wear them for any period of time due to the

constriction. There are no changes in colour such as redness etc.

She has gone to the doctor and the doctor gave her the helpful advice

that she should just stay off it (always easy to do when you are working

a full time job and trying to operate a small business outside the

regular working hours).

I was going to manually stimulate the lymphatic system with a treatment

but we can't seem to co-ordinate our schedules. So, I said that I would

ask all of you intelligent people if there was something you could

recommend for her to do on her own.

I look forward to hearing your suggestions. They don't necessarily have

to be aromatherapy either. She's willing to look at herbs etc. as well.

If the person has a severely swollen ankle and it is NOT due to an

injury, swollen ankles often signal heart or circulation problems.

Which should be checked out.

Elevating is a must.

Getting the water out of the ankles is too.

Watermelon is good for that, it will draw the water out well.

Watermelon juice is deliceous and works.

Heat will aggrevate the issue, so swollen ankles are often worst in hot

water or after standing a lot.

Keeping the ankles cold via icepacks and elevated , will give fast

relief, but needs to be repeated often.

I also sit on the side of the tub and have short spurts of warm (

not hot) water, than cold water and always ending with cold water, run

over my feet.

It really helps me during hot days.

Taking a supplement such as Butchers broom or horsechestnut* also has

kept my legs to have better circulation and less severe swelling.

Again, if the swelling is not due to an injury, it needs to be checked out.

In Germany they do have a gel that cools, made from horse chestnut (

Rosskastanien), that has been very helpful for me to apply when I can't

elevate my feet or run warm/cold water of them. I think the Mertz

Apothecary in Chicago sells it.
