Chris,

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your grandmother. I hope no one minds

but I would like to share with you a piece that I wrote after my father and my

son passed away. My father in 1994 and Stephen, my son, in 1995. I hope that

it will be as much help for you to read as it was for me when I wrote it.

TRANSITION

A breath, a blink, a heartbeat, a whisper. Painfully and,

sometimes silently they leave us. From shock to acceptance, numbness to pain,

tears to despair, those of us left behind wander down those seemingly endless

paths toward a new beginning.

Even with our faith in God and a promised reunion, the road ahead

seems long and lonely. Friends and family gather around and give us their love

but the empty space inside cannot be filled or diminished. There is no comfort

but that which we find within ourselves. They can only lend their support till

we can stand alone. We must each find that invisible line that we dare not

cross, lest we lose our way.

We cling to things that have been touched and treasured by our

loved one, now gone from us, until the time comes when we feel within ourselves

that it is time to part with it and move on. Only we can know when that time

has come.

Given to family, friends, charities and those in need, we dole

out precious memories of time now past. We slowly plod our way through days of

sadness to come out on the other side where we can think of the one gone from us

with laughter and joy in their journey and not the pain and sadness of their

departing.

The tears will still come, from time to time. The ache for

their touch and laughter and smiles will still remain. For, after all, we are

mortal souls. God in his wisdom gives us his love and comfort and brings back

into our lives the smiles and laughter and joy and the love we had only

misplaced for a while.

A breath, a blink, a heartbeat, a whisper. Painfully , and

sometimes, silently they leave us. But in our hearts, they live on.

Thank you so much for the poem. I forwarded it to my aunt and a friend. Lost

my uncle and friends dad about 2 years ago and both from time to time still

grieve deeply. Thanks again. Kathy

Chris, condolensces on your loss, grandmothers are for the most part, sweet

parts of our lives. Their memories treasured.

Evelyn this is beautiful. My mother passed in 96, and was not in good health

when she died, but still I miss her. The last couple of years of her life, it

seemed that our roles were reversed, and I know that she was at peace and with

my dad, who was killed in a freak car accident when I was 5..but still the heart

hurts occationally.

Evelyn, thank you so much for sharing this!! It really says it

all! I've lost both my parents to cancer, my mother was only 39

when she died, my father was a young, active 66...the loss of

someone you love is devastating, and your poem expresses this, and

the ongoing grief process beautifully! Oh, how I can relate to your

writing!! Thank you again for sharing!!!
