Pruning, when they finish blooming... just the flowers though... I find the

best thing I can do for my Lavender plants is to totally ignore them. Which I

do in grand style because I can't stand them... and I have about 4 different

varietys... pretty to look at when they bloom... stink real bad when you get up

close....

OK everyone, My question is about caring for lavender plants. I have a number of

them that are about 3 years old. David built a beautiful arbor for me with 2

white wicker swings & it smells so heavenly out there swinging in the lavender.

So I am wondering how long do lavender plants usually live and what is the besyt

way to care for them, pruning etc. I mostly use the flowering stems for dried

arrangements etc. Thanks! Gloria

Hey Helaine,

It's not the " wrong plants " , it's the wrong nose. I don't like Lavender

anything except the color. Not the essential oil, not the flowers, sachets,

fragrance oil, nuthin. To me it's very musty. Just don't care for it...

But my kids are being brought up properly. They all love it, can't get enough

of it... For all of them, lavender has been there to help make ouches feel

better and to make their colds feel better... lavender for them is comfort and

security and love... for me it's just stinky stuff to make my kids feel better!

;-)

Then you have the wrong lavender plants. I have quite a variety of

lavenders in my garden but my best smelling is my provence lavender plants I

have 6 of them that I bought a few yrs ago at the lavender festival in

Sequim, Wa! They have a slightly medicinal scent its a bit more of a sweet

scent which I love. I use my lavender for many things as well as the other

herbs I have in my garden.

I cut all my flower stems off at the end of the flower season. Then in the

early spring (zone 8 here) I cut them back some. It seems to help them fill

out more as mine are pretty bushy looking. They need plenty of drainage,

water as needed and sun! I use mine for tea, sachets, herbal pillows and I

make infused oil with lavender.

<SNIP>

Kathleen,

I have to agree with you! Of course, I don't have lavender plants....but

boy, that Bulgarian Lavender EO I have is almost too much! <yuck>

It's got a very heavy medicinal smell to me.....but when I use it in

lotions, soap, or balms, in a very small amount....it tends to let a slight

floral note abound over the medicine smell. :) So, then it isn't so bad.

I don't know if I would like the actual flowers or not....I guess it would

just depend.

Oh, and you don't have the 'wrong nose' either. :) It's just certain noses

like certain smells. Being different is what makes the world go

around....at least that's what I've always heard. ;)

I know that I absolutely LOVE most any kind of rose.....and so does my

mom.....but my oldest daughter doesn't care for them very much! I suppose

when she has a gift of roses from her first boyfriend, she might change her

mind! ;) But then again, if she's ANYTHING like me, she'll tell him right

off.... " Don't buy any more of those. They stink! " =o)

Ya'll all have a good day now!

You must had missed that post about how I care for them

sooooooooooooo.........pleanty of sun, good draining soil as they dont like

real wet feet. We live in wa state and it rains alot so we have them in

raised beds. I cut flower thru the flowering season so the keep producing.

In the fall I cut back the dead flower stems and we mulch them. In the

early spring I then cut them down half way so it incourages growth. I dry

my flowers to use them in many different ways. Plus I also make a lavender

infused oil for soap making.

I have tree like Rosemary called gorza (sp) I call them godzila cuz its

spelled something like that. It does not have the thin needles they are

thicker. I also have trailing rosemary too. In the fall and spring they are

covered with the most pretty little blue blooms. I also make infused oil

with rosemary too. Basically you treat it the same as you do Lavender.

Being as I am in zone 8 I dont have to over winter any of my herbs but in

other zones they need to be potted and brought inside. Rosemary and garlic

make a yummy combo added in olive oil or vinegar to flavor your foods. If

you go to my website below you can see on the about us page some pictures of

my garden.

Gloria-

I'm so upset, because the lavender I planted in 1985 croaked from

our harsh New England winter. Now I have these little bitty

things... sigh.

I planted mine near a stone wall w/ cement..... and they love.

Apparently lavender likes the calcium that leaches out.

Gloria,

I work at a nursery and also collect and grow different varieties of

lavender as it is my favorite. I would say the biggest mistake with lavender

(this depends on where you live) that people make is giving it to much water and

fertilizer. Lavender likes a well draining soil. In zone 5 where I live,

lavender does not require much fertilizer, water and I trim just a little if

there is winter damage. When you do water try not to get any on the foliage. I

use an all purpose fertilizer twice during the growing season. Make sure they

have plenty of air circulation and sunshine. I have about 15 varieties (not

enough). I use lavender everywhere, in oils, soap, lotions, potpourri,

arrangements, etc. I love it!!!
